ACFL: Glasdrumman
claim points in Banbridge
Senior Football
Banbridge 0-11 Glasdrumman 1-14
On Friday night Glasdrumman made the
journey to Banbridge conscious that
this had never been a happy hunting
ground as far a league points had been
concerned over the years. However they
were first to register with a Cormac
Murphy point within a minute.
Banbridge hit back almost immediately
with points from Stephen McArdle and
Johnny Burns before Raymond Clarke
levelled the game with a point after
six minutes. Within four minutes
Banbridge were two points to the good
with scores from Johnny Burns and Liam
McCrum. Almost immediately a surging
attack from Glasdrumman down the right
resulted in a goal when Cormac Murphy
hit a low hard shot to the back of the
Banbridge net. In the seventeenth
minute Cormac Murphy sent in a high
dropping ball and Declan Grant rose to
fist it over the bar to give
Glasdrumman a two point lead but
Banbridge had other ideas. Johnny
Burns hit three unanswered points
within seven minutes. Glasdrumman had
another goal chance but the ball was
brilliantly saved by Colm Gribben in
the Banbridge goal and the last score
of the half fell to Banbridge when
Brian Donaghy pointed to leave the
halftime score Banbridge 0-8
Glasdrumman 1-3.
Glasdrumman started the second half
with a new found sense of purpose and
were back on level terms within two
minutes with points from Raymond
Magorrian and Cormac Murphy.
Glasdrumman started to move the ball
at speed and totally dominated the
next ten minutes resulting in
unanswered points from Raymond Clarke,
Martin O’Neill,
Cormac Murphy, Mick Mooney and a point
from a forty five by Cormac Murphy.
Johnny Burns eased the pressure a bit
for Banbridge with a point in the
thirteenth minute but Raymond
Magorrian soon restored the
Glasdrumman lead with his second point
of the game. Rory Hill and Raymond
Magorrian exchanged points after
twenty two minutes before substitute
Rory Gillan pulled one back for
Banbridge with a well taken point but
Glasdrumman were not to be denied a
hard earned victory and they finished
the stronger with points from Cormac
Murphy and Connaire Harrison to leave
the final score Banbridge 0-11
Glasdrumman 1-14.
This was an very good overall
Glasdrumman performance against a
useful Banbridge side. The defence was
generally sound making some very
important blocking and clearances
especially at crucial times during
the game. The midfielders won a lot of
ball and when the ball reached the
forwards they produced some good
direct attacking football especially
when they moved the ball quickly. In
fact the second half performance was
the best that I have seen from a
Glasdrumman team for a long time.
