John Brennan
Intermediate Championship Semi Final
Glasdrumman 0-8 Ballymartin 2-4
On Friday night, on what was
probably the worst night of the
season for a football match,
Glasdrumman and Ballymartin went
head to in the first semi final of
this year’s Down Intermediate
championship. The much anticipated
match began with two points for
Glasdrumman, one from Raymond
Magorrian after five minutes
followed by a Cormac Murphy point in
the seventh minute. Ballymartin
pulled a point back four minutes
later but Colm Carr restored the
Glasdrumman lead in the fifteenth
minute. Ballymartin quickly
responded with their second point of
the match but Glasdrumman further
extended their lead with points from
Cormac Murphy and Colm Carr to leave
the halftime score Glasdrumman 0-5
Ballymartin 0-2. Glasdrumman started
the second half as they had the
first with a Raymond Magorrian point
after two minutes to leave four
points between the teams with
Glasdrumman looking to be
comfortably in control of the game.
Then in the eighteenth minute double
disaster struck with the dubious
dismissal of a Glasdrumman defender
followed within a minute by a
Ballymartin goal to cut the
Glasdrumman lead to a single point.
Declan Grant put two point between
the sides with a twenty second
minute point and then came the
hammer blow of a second Ballymartin
goal to give them a one point lead
for the first time in the game. They
added a further point a minute later
but Raymond Magorrian responded with
his third point of the match to
leave the narrowest of margins
between the teams. As Glasdrumman
pushed forward in search of the
equalising point they were caught on
the counter attack with a
Ballymartin point to leave the final
score Glasdrumman 0-8 Ballymartin
2-4.
