John Brennan
Downpatrick too strong for Glasdrumman
Glasdrumman,
fresh from their victory over
Carryduff on Monday, were the
visitors to Park Thomas Russell on
Thursday night where they faced a
Downpatrick side determined to get
their first points of the new season
following their defeat in their
first game at the hands of
Ballyholland . Downpatrick started
the stronger and were two points up
after seven minute with two scores
from frees by Peter Telford. Tony
McShane added another point a minute
later before Raymond Clarke opened
the Glasdrumman account with a point
in the sixteenth minute. Glasdrumman
started to get into the game but
some erratic shooting left them
trailing by two points when the
score could easily have been
reversed. However Downpatrick
settled back into their rhythm and
were rewarded with three points from
Karl Oakes before Cormac Murphy got
his name on the scoreboard to leave
the halftime score Downpatrick 0-6
Glasdrumman 0-2.
Karl Oakes
added another point to his tally
straight from the throw in and four
minutes later Peter Turley added a
second from a long range free to
leave six points between the sides.
Cormac Murphy got his second score
of the game with an eighth minute
point but Glasdrumman were unable to
stem the tide as Downpatrick added a
further three points without reply
in a five minute spell of dominance.
However Glasdrumman were not to be
outdone and they pulled back three
points in the last fifteen minutes
with scores from Colm Carr, Raymond
Clarke and Cormac Murphy
interspersed with a Downpatrick
point to leave the final score
Downpatrick 0-12 Glasdrumman 0-6.
Goalkeeper Ronan McDowell did well
to keep his goal intact and was
called on to make several important
saves at crucial times in the game.
The Glasdrumman defence, although
under pressure for most of the game,
did very well to restrict a fast
running Downpatrick attack that at
times threatened to overrun them.
Downpatrick won a lot of broken ball
around midfield which meant that the
Glasdrumman forwards didn’t get
their usual supply of the ball and
when they did, they encountered a
good Downpatrick defence which gave
them very little time on the ball
forcing them into errors which, on
another day would have resulted in
scores.
