John Brennan
Attical made
the journey to the Quarter Road on
Wednesday night for a very important
match against Glasdrumman, a match
which could throw up a number of
possibilities depending on the
result. If Glasdrumman were to win
the match then they would win the
league. If Attical won then
Glasdrumman would be into a playoff
with the winners of Attical’s last
match with Newry Mitchels unless
that match ended in a draw in which
case Glasdrumman would still win the
league. With so many permutations it
was a determined side Glasdrumman
side which took the field and
immediately from the throw in centre
half back Shaun McVeigh surged
forward to record Glasdrumman’s
first point followed almost
immediately by a point from Connaire
Harrison. A minute later Glasdrumman
were awarded a penalty and up
stepped Connaire Harrison to coolly
plant the ball in the Attical net.
Attical surged forward almost
immediately and were rewarded with a
penalty. Will Lowry faced the kick
and, diving to his left, saved
brilliantly in what was probably the
turning point of the match. Attical
piled on the pressure and were
rewarded two points before Ryan
Doran pulled one back for
Glasdrumman in the tenth minute. Two
more Attical points ensued but Paul
Grant and Connaire Harrison restored
the Glasdrumman lead with points
apiece. In a spell of Glasdrumman
dominance Andrew Doran and Connaire
Harrison further extended the
Glasdrumman lead but it was Attical
who finished the stronger with two
points to leave the halftime score
Glasdrumman 1-7 Attical 0-6.
The second
half started with an Attical point
but Connaire Harrison responded
quickly with a point to restore the
Glasdrumman lead. Again Attical
pointed and again Harrison responded
with a similar score. Sixteen
minutes into the half Paul Grant got
on the end of a high dropping ball
to score Glasdrumman’s second goal
and despite Attical ability to win
most of the breaking ball in
midfield for the rest of the game it
was Glasdrumman who registered the
remaining scores as Connaire
Harrison and James McDowell pointed
to leave the final score Glasdrumman
2-11 Attical 0-8.
This was a
good performance from a Glasdrumman
team which improved with every game
as the season progressed. Goalkeeper
Will Lowry had an outstanding game
confidently clearing his lines on
many occasions as well as superbly
saving the penalty. John McAteer,
Christopher Cassidy and Darren Joyce
coped very well with the Attical
attack and they were well protected
by the half back line of Jamie
Carroll, Shaun McVeigh and Gavin
McCracken. Midfielders Art McCartan
and Christopher McDowell provided a
good supply of ball to the forwards.
The half forward line of Connaire
Harrison, Andrew Doran and James
McDowell caused a lot of headaches
for the Attical defence as did the
full forwards Ryan Doran, Stefan
McGuiness and Paul Grant.
Substitutes Paul Quinn, Paul
McCavera, Sean Cunningham and Mark
Doran played their part when
introduced in what was a good
overall team performance.
