Glasdrumman GAC held it’s
annual dinner dance and presentation
night in Diamond Pats Newcastle on
Saturday night. After thanking
Gregory Rodgers and his staff for
their excellent hospitality, club
chairman Dan McCartan began his
address with a tribute to Mick
Mooney who has passed away so
tragically only weeks after
Glasdrumman had achieved their first
league title in the club’s history
and he especially welcomed Mick’s
mother Claire and the family to the
awards night. He thanked everyone
who had helped the club in the past
year and looked forward to building
on what had been achieved both on
and off the field during 2005.
He
paid special tribute to the team
mentors of both the senior and under
age teams and especially to the club’s
referee Patrick Trimble. He thanked
John Brennan for his work as club
PRO. He thanked everyone involved in
representing the club both on the
football field and in the Scor
competitions. He expressed his
thanks to underage amalgamation
partners Atticall through their
chairman Thomas Colgan and to the
Halfway House and thanked them for
their continued cooperation during
the season. He thanked senior team
sponsor Paddy Maginn of Quinns the
Spirit Grocers for his continued
generous support. He had a special
word of congratulations to the
Glasdrumman golf team of Damien
Grant, Martin O’Neill, Tommy Madden
and Veronica McGreevy on
representing the club and winning
the Club Down tournament.
He welcomed special guests Seamus
Walsh, Mark Turley and James Colgan
and said that the club was both
pleased and honoured that they were
able to attend. Seamus Walsh
expressed his pleasure at being
invited as a guest to the
Glasdrumman dinner. He went on to
talk about the club’s
contribution to the GAA in the
community and the county noting that
the Glasdrumman’s success in recent
years had started with their Junior
championship win over his home club
Dundrum. He particularly
congratulated William James Smith
for his efforts on the South Down
Board and as a member of the County
Board, Patrick Trimble for his
continuing contribution to
refereeing in the county and Liam
McGreevy for his work with coaching
and ended with some thoughts on
Glasdrumman’s outstanding success
during the year.
Mark Turley expressed his thanks for
the invitation and congratulated the
club on its achievements last season
and over the past few seasons and
entertained the crowd with a few
stories of his visits to the club
both as a player and manager with
Glenn, Killyleagh and Darragh
Cross. He encouraged the players to
aim high for the incoming season and
stressed that there was no easy way
to success other than through hard
work and 100% effort. James Colgan
thanked the club for the invitation
and told of his first contact with
Glasdrumman through his involvement
with Paul Brennan on the All Ireland
winning St Louis’ team and how Paul
had talked with such pride about
playing for and representing his
club. James wished the club every
success in the 2006 season and said
how he was looking forward to his
next visit to Glasdrumman when An
Riocht came to the Quarter Road in
the upcoming season in Division 2.
He told the players that you get
only get out of football what you
put in and he encouraged them to
always strive to a higher level.
Atticall chairman Thomas Colgan
congratulated the club on their
outstanding season. He said he felt
proud that Atticall had contributed
