Glasdrumman Notes
Glasdrumman prove too strong for
Downpatrick
Friday night
saw the visit of Downpatrick to the
Quarter Road where they met a
Glasdrumman side keen to avenge
their defeat at the hands of
Downpatrick earlier in the season.
However Downpatrick started the
stronger and within two minutes
Peter Telford ran through the heart
of the Glasdrumman defence before
hitting the ball to the Glasdrumman
net. A minute later Tony McShane
added another point for the visitors
before Raymond Magorrian opened the
Glasdrumman account with a fourth
minute point. Karl Oakes and
Connaire Harrison exchanged points
in the sixth and seventh minutes
respectively before Danny Carville
got his name on the score sheet on
nine minutes. Again Cormac Murphy
pulled one back for Glasdrumman but
Downpatrick further extended their
lead with points from Karl Oakes and
Peter Telford. In the twenty second
minute Connaire Harrison ran through
the Downpatrick defence before being
brought down for a penalty. Up
stepped Cormac Murphy to coolly
dispatch the spot kick to the
Downpatrick net. Peter Telford added
a twenty fifth minute point but
Glasdrumman finished the stronger
with points from Raymond Magorrian
and Cormac Murphy to leave the
halftime score Glasdrumman 1-05
Downpatrick 1-06.
Again
Downpatrick started the second half
as they had the first with early
points from Peter Telford and John
Fegan. Points apiece from Raymond
Magorrian and Raymond Clarke reduced
the Downpatrick lead back to a
single point again. Tony McShane and
Cormac Murphy exchanged points in
the fourteenth and eighteenth
minutes before substitute Caoilin
Boyd put two points back between the
sides. In the twenty second Cormac
Murphy reduced the lead to a single
score. A minute later full forward
Raymond Clarke was brought down and
the referee awarded Glasdrumman
their second penalty of the match.
Again it fell to Cormac Murphy to
coolly hit the spot kick to the
Downpatrick net to give Glasdrumman
the lead for the first time in the
game. Inspired by this Glasdrumman
moved up a gear and within two
minutes they had extended their lead
to four points with scores from
Raymond Magorrian and Colm Carr. A
minute later corner forward Connaire
Harrison had the ball in the
Downpatrick net again following an
excellent move and the same player
added another point a minute later
when he got his fist to a high
dropping ball which could just as
easily have ended up in the net. The
last score of the game fell to John
Fegan when he hit over a last minute
consolation point to leave the full
time score Glasdrumman 3-12
Downpatrick 1-11.
This was a
very good all round performance from
a determined Glasdrumman team. Ronan
McDowell in goals was his usual
secure self and he was ably
protected by the full back line of
Shaun McVeigh, Francis O’Neill and
Art McCartan. The half back line of
Colm Carr, Brian Burns and Martin
O’Neill dealt well with a very
capable Downpatrick half forward
line with the switching of positions
by Raymond Magorrian and Colm Carr
proving very influential to the
outcome of the game. Pat Mallon and
Declan Grant, playing his first game
for some time following his hand
injury, were very effective around
the middle of the field and they
were ably assisted by the half
forward line of Mark Trimble, Cormac
Murphy and Raymond Magorrian and
latterly Colm Carr. The full forward
line of James McDowell, Raymond
Clarke, Connaire Harrison and Gary
McGreevy, when he came on as a
substitute, proved to be a handful
for the Downpatrick defence causing
them all sorts of problems
particularly in the closing stages
of the game.
