Glasdrumman share the points in Mourne derby
Glasdrumman came away from Atticall
on Friday night with a share of the
points from their first Mourne derby
game of the season. Atticall were
quickly off the mark in the first
minute when Gary Morgan pointed from
a free. Two minutes later Louis
Sloan got his name on the score
sheet with a point before two points
from Paddy Sloan in the fifth and
eighth minute gave Atticall a four
point advantage. As in recent games
Glasdrumman were slow starters but
when they got going they started to
take the early advantage away from
Atticall. Following several wasted
chances they finally got on the
scoreboard with a tenth minute point
from Raymond Magorrian followed
quickly with a Cormac Murphy point
to reduce the deficit. A fourteenth
minute Gary Morgan point restored
Atticall’s advantage to three points
but although the last fifteen
minutes belonged to Glasdrumman
their reward was only two points,
one each from Raymond Clarke and
Connaire Harrison, to leave the
halftime score Atticall 0-5
Glasdrumman 0-4.
Atticall started the second half as
they had the first but despite some
good play it was eight minutes
before the first score. A long range
free kick from the right sideline
dropped into the Glasdrumman
goalmouth and the inrushing Martin
Trainor did enough for the ball to
end up in the Glasdrumman net and
suddenly the lead for Atticall was
back to four points, exactly what it
had been twenty two minutes earlier.
Rather than giving Atticall a lift
the score had the opposite effect as
Glasdrumman started to show that
never say die attitude which always
seems to come to the fore when they
visit Atticall. Two Glasdrumman
points, one each from Gary McGreevy
and Raymond Magorrian, put
Glasdrumman back in touch before a
twentieth minute Atticall point
increased their lead. The last ten
minutes belonged to Glasdrumman as
they set about the task of pulling
back the Atticall lead. A twenty
first minute point from substitute
Shane Feeney was quickly followed by
similar scores from Connaire
Harrison and Colm Carr and
Glasdrumman were back on level
terms. Atticall rallied their troops
and were rewarded with a point a
minute later from Martin Trainor but
the last score of the game fell to
team captain Pat Mallon as he
knocked over a point, reminiscent of
his point against Ardglass in the
league decider last season, to leave
the final score Atticall 1-7
Glasdrumman 0-10.
This was a determined performance
from a Glasdrumman side short quite
a few regulars due to injury. Ronan
McDowell was his usual secure self
when called upon. He received good
cover from the full back line of
Shaun McVeigh, playing in his first
senior derby match, Francis O’Neill
and Daniel McCartan. The half back
line of Art McCartan, Kevin Burns
and Martin O’Neill work hard
frustrating the Atticall half
forwards, while at the same time
joining the Glasdrumman attack when
the opportunity arose. Midfielders
Gary McGreevy and Pat Mallon showed
all the grit and determination
required for local derby games as
well as both getting on the score
sheet. The half forward line of
Raymond Clarke, Cormac Murphy and
Shaun Brennan played with
determination winning a lot of
broken ball around midfield and
securing a steady supply of ball to
the full forward line of Raymond
Magorrian, Colm Carr and Connaire
Harrison who all got their names on
the score sheet. Substitute Shane
Feeney played his part winning
several important frees as well as
getting a vital point.
