Glasdrumman and Ballyholland share the points in tight encounter

Friday night’s visitors to the Quarter Road were Ballyholland who, despite their Division 1 status of last year, were one point ahead of Glasdrumman in the Division 2 league table going into this match. Giving their respective league positions this always had the potential to be a tight encounter. However when the Glasdrumman management team sat down to pick their team they were faced with a hugh list of injuries. Undaunted by this they put their faith in some of the young upcoming talented players in the squad, a faith which was rewarded big time by these young men. Straight from the throw in Pat Mallon planted the ball between the posts for the first point of the game. The next two points came from Joe Murphy and Rob Quinn as Ballyholland eased into the lead. A Cormac Murphy point brought the game all square again before Shane Mulholland again put Ballyholland into the lead. A minute later Shaun Brennan leveled things yet again. Conairre Harrison and Rob Quinn exchanged points yet to leave the score four points apiece with twelve minutes on the clock. Ballyholland started to get the upper hand at this stage and they were rewarded with two points from John Barry and one from Stephen Quinn before Raymond Magorrian got his name on the score sheet with a sixteenth minute point. Ballyholland further extended their lead to five points with scores from Shane Mulholland, Mark O’Hare and Joe Murphy  before  Glasdrumman got some respite with a twenty fifth point from Cormac Murphy. As the half ticked away Mark O’Hare and Connaire Harrison exchanged points to leave the halftime score Glasdrumman 0-7 Ballyholland 0-11.

Young Connaire Harrison, who was having an outstanding game, cut the Ballyholland lead with a third minute point before Shane Mulholland and Paddy McAnulty’s points put extra pressure on Glasdrumman. Colm Carr got his name on the score sheet a minute later but this was cancelled out when Stephen Quinn pointed for Ballyholland in the sixteenth minute. A minute later Connaire Harrison scored an inspirational point from an almost impossible angle on the right hand sideline. This was quickly followed a minute later by an excellent point from debutant Ryan Doran to leave three points between the teams. What Glasdrumman needed at this stage was a goal and that is exactly what they got as Connaire Harrison coolly planted the ball past Rory Mathews in the Ballyholland goal. A Cormac Murphy point in injury time put Glasdrumman into the lead for the first time since the first minute of the game but it was left to the vastly experienced Shane Mulholland to pull back a point from a free with almost the last kick of the game to leave the final score Glasdrumman 1-12 Ballyholland 0-15.

This was a determined performance from a very young Glasdrumman side short quite a few regulars due to injury. Ronan McDowell was his usual secure self when called upon again keeping a clean sheet. He received good cover from the full back line of Shaun McVeigh, Francis O’Neill and Daniel McCartan. The half back line of Colm Carr, Martin O’Neill and Art McCartan work hard against a good Ballyholland set of half forwards. Midfielders Cormac Murphy and Pat Mallon showed a lot of grit and determination winning a lot of ball as well as both getting on the score sheet. The half forward line of Shane O’Neill, Raymond Clarke and Shaun Brennan played with determination securing a steady supply of ball to the full forward line of Connaire Harrison, Raymond Magorrian and Ryan Doran who all got their names on the score sheet. Substitutes James McDowell and Christopher McDowell both played their part when called upon in what was a gritty overall performance from the team. To get a result like this with such a young side augers well for the future of the club and, while not taking anything away from the performance of the more experienced players in the side, it would be remiss not to give a special mention to the young players who stepped up to the mark and made such an vital contribution to achieving the result.
