Saturday
match entailed a second away Mourne
derby in two weeks when Glasdrumman
were the visitors to Ballymartin for
the outstanding series six matches
postponed from earlier in the season
with Glasdrumman needing a win to
secure their place in Division 2 for
next season. Playing with a strong
wind Ballymartin were first to score
when Kieran O’Hare pointed from a
free in the first minute but
Glasdrumman settled and took the
lead with two points from Cormac
Murphy on four and fourteen minutes.
Ballymartin equalised through Rory
McManus after twenty three minutes
and went in at half time with a two
point lead with points from Kieran
O’Hare and a brilliant point from a
long distance free by midfielder
Paddy Green to leave the half time
score Ballymartin 0-4 Glasdrumman
0-2.
Following the
half time team talk it was a
determined Glasdrumman side which
took the field for the second half
and almost straight from the throw
in Raymond Clarke pointed to leave a
single score between the sides.
Three points from Cormac Murphy and
a point from Connaire Harrison left
Glasdrumman with a three point
cushion with nineteen minutes on the
clock. Cathal McDowell cut the
Glasdrumman lead with a twenty third
minute point but again Glasdrumman
forced the pace and were rewarded
with a point a minute later from
corner back Art McCartan after a
surging run. Raymond Clarke added
another a minute later but
Ballymartin responded almost
immediately through Stephen
Brannigan. However the last score of
the game came after thirty minutes
when Raymond Clarke again pointed to
leave a four point cushion for
Glasdrumman with the final score
Ballymartin 0-6 Glasdrumman 0-10.
This was a
battling performance from a
Glasdrumman team who knew that their
Division 2 lives for next season
depended on it. Ronan McDowell had a
secure game in goals ably protected
by the full back line of Art
McCartan, Kevin Burns and Daniel
McCartan. The half back line of Mark
Trimble, Francis O’Neill and Brian
Burns had probably their best
overall game of the season.
Midfielders Cormac Murphy and Declan
Grant ensured a good supply of the
ball to the forwards where Colm
Carr, Raymond Magorrian, Martin
O’Neill, Shaun Brennan, Raymond
Clarke and Connaire Harrison played
their part along with substitutes
Sean McDowell and Shane Feeney to
secure victory for Glasdrumman and
their survival in Division 2 for
another season.
