EVERYONE'S A WINNER AT
GLASDRUMMAN GOLF CLASSIC

Pat Mallon's Team

Glasdrumman GAC held their first ever Golf Classic at Kilkeel Golf Club on Friday 4th July and what a super day it turned out to be. With the weather making it a perfect day for golf, 34 teams teed off from 9.00am through to 4.00pm. Pat Mallon's team led the way and Martin O'Neill set the tone of the day with a good tee shot at the first. Ogie's team set off a short time later as one of the favourites, closely followed by fancied outsiders captained by Gary McGreevy. As it rolled closer to 11.00 there was an excited anticipation for the team captained by John McDowell of Terry Joyce, Raymond Clarke and Peter Trainor. Raymond Clarke obviously had a bit of local knowledge of the course as his tee shot ricocheted of the trees back into the fariway. Despite a dodgy first shot, John sent his second like a rocket to the fairway. His team then set off, petrol strimmer in hand. This tournament had attracted a number of teams from various Golf Clubs and all eyes were on Brian Simon's team as they strode confidently onto the first tee. A special appearance from Michael Madine also raised a few eyebrows. With the spectators watching excitedly, his tee shot did find the fairway, but unfortunately it was the eighteenth and not the first. Father Peter O'Hare followed and guided his tee shot into the fairway. It was left to the local teams to round off and a hush came over the first tee as Eddie Carr stepped up for his tee shot. The first tee was surrounded and the balconies on the clubhouse spilling over when Damien Grant stepped onto the first, his tee shot also finding the fairway. John Mallon was now able to relax, come out from behind the trees and put away his video camera without any injury or bruises, his danger money is in the post. As the first groups began to return to the clubhouse there was a buzz in the air, but it turned out to be John McDowell strimming back some briers off the fourteenth fairway. The final group arrived back late on and the when the scores had been totted up and everyone been fed and watered, the presentation ceremony was carried out by Club Chairman, John Brennan. John thanked Kilkeel Golf Club for the use of their course for Glasdrumman's inaugural Golf Classic and praised how well the course looked and played on the day. John also thanked the Golf Classic Committee for organising the days event and all those volunteers who turned up throughout the day to help with the smooth operation of the Classic. John went on to thank the main sponsors, Glasgiven Contracts, and all the other sponsors of prizes and holes for their support of the event, but he left the most important to the end, the competitors without whom the Golf Classic could not have taken place. The team prizes were then presented by Glasgiven Directors, William James Smith and Liam Murphy. First Prize Sponsored by Murdock's Building Supplies- Joey Annett, Marian Annett, Lee Annett, Sean Connolly, Second Prize Sponsored by Kilsaran Concrete- Liam Cunningham, Eugene Cunningham, Frank Cunningham, Kevin Mussen and Third Prize Sposored by O'Neills Sportswear - Jeremy Murray, William Holmes, Timothy Hanna, Robin McCullough. Nearest the Pin at 8th Sponsored by AJC Electricals - Philip Kincaid, Nearest the Pin at 11th Sponsored by Granden Design- Liam Cunningham, Nearest the Pin at 15th Sponsored by Murray Car & Commercial Repairs - John Doran, Longest Drive on 18th Sponsored by Economy Glass - Paul Brown. A great day was enjoyed by all, here's to the second Glasdrumman Golf Classic in 2009.
