GLENN added the Junior Football Championship
to the Division Four League title at windy Tullylish
last Sunday.
Like the previously drawn match,
this was a close encounter and Glenn won because their
tactic of playing Seamas McGuinness as a third midfielder
proved a winner.
Banbridge were never able to counter
the combined strength of McGuinness, Tom Grant and
Peter Farrelly around the middle of the park.
Banbridge, with the wind behind them,
did create chances in the first half but hit two many
wides including four wasted forty-fives. A 0-4 to
0-2 lead was never going to be sufficient against
Glenn and the wind in the second half.
Within 10 minutes of the restart
Glenn had moved into a two-point advantage and would
have had two goals but for two splendid saves by Michael
McAllister. Midway through the half Glenn's Frank
Diamond made a vital interception on Pat Feeney which
led to David Bagnall scoring at the other end.
Feeney and Brian Donaghy continued
to push forward adventurously for Banbridge and helped
create scores for Burns and McCrum. Ten minutes from
time McCrum hit a post and Glenn drove the ball downfield.
Nicholas Cranney showed great vision in playing the
ball into Mark Lennon's path and he palmed the ball
to the Banbridge net for what proved to be the winning
goal.
Cathal Murtagh, Oliver Conlon and
Frank Diamond were strong and resilient in the winners'
defence. Grant, Farrelly and McGuinness called most
of the shots around midfield and Nicholas Cranney
and Cathal O'Hare made the moves up front.
Banbridge had redoubtable battlers
in Lee Rooney, Brian Donaghy, Pat Feeney and Rory
Hill.
Glenn scorers: M Lennon 1-1, Davy
Bagnall 0-5, C O'Hare 0-1, Darren Bagnall 0-1, T Grant
0-1.
Banbridge scorers: L McCrum 0-4, P Burns 0-1, M Morgan
0-1.
