Kilcoo bury Burren in 2003 SFC - 16/08/2003

Down Senior Football Championship first round: Kilcoo 2-05 Burren 0-10

Former All Ireland Champions Burren were defeated by a young Kilcoo side in Hilltown last night. Kilcoo owe their victory to two goals which they scored early in the first half. In a two minute spell between the sixth and eighth minute Kilcoo hit the Burren net twice.

Burren opened the scoring with Gavin Murdock, James McCartan and Paddy Bradley all scoring to put Burren three points up with only six minutes gone. Kilcoo forward Gary McEvoy then shocked the Burren defence when he lobbed the Burren keeper to level the game. Two minutes later a brilliant through ball from Dominic McEvoy set up Mark Brannigan for Kilcoo's second goal. Both sides exchanged points as Kilcoo went in at half time two point up - Kilcoo 2-02 to Burren's 0-06.

As in the first half Burren got the opening scores through James McCartan and Gavin Murdock. The sides once again exchanged scores through Kevin Morgan and Ronan McGovern.

A Mark Brannigan free put Kilcoo back in the lead and five minutes later he added another to put Kilcoo two points in front with only a few minutes remaining. Burren throw everything they had at Kilcoo in the search for the winning goal, which would have taken them into the next round of the Down Senior Championship and PJ McAlinden seemed to be through for that goal but it was brilliantly saved by Kilcoo keeper James Kane. In the final minutes Gavin Murdock scored a point to narrow Kilcoo's lead to a point, but Calico held out for what will be seen as a famous victory and the second major shock in the Down Championship after Newry Shamrock defeating Clonduff the previous night.
