There was only ever going to be
one topic of conversation within
the club this week how would seniors
do in their first round match of
the County Championship against
Warrenpoint? First round matches
haven’t always been the most
productive in terms of results in
the championship but this time it
was a different story. Following
their championship match they then
travelled to Bryansford looking
for revenge in the league. Also
playing this week were the U12’s
who had another play off match this
time against Castlewellan and the
U16’s who were visitors to
Rostrevor on Thursday night.
• Congratulations to the
Seniors on reaching the quarter
finals of the county championship
following their four points win
over Warrenpoint. The first ten
minutes of the first half saw the
magpies slowly shake of some of
the nerves which saw them trail
0-4 to 0-2. However from then on
they slowly began to show themselves
and by half time they were level
0-6 to 0-6 thanks to some great
free taking from Donal Kane. The
second half was much different as
the team began to take control.
Gary McEvoy and Conor Laverty began
to find more space to run at the
point defence. Conor Morgan was
also playing some good football
while Donal Kane carried his first
half form through. The defence by
now was in complete control with
Brian O’Hanlon making his
usual trade mark runs as they won
on a score line of 0-14 to 0-10.
Following this win it was back to
the league on Friday night as they
travelled to Newcastle to take on
Bryansford. The team was clearly
brimming with confidence following
the championship win and gave Bryansford
no chance winning by thirteen points
thanks to a fantastic team performance.
Many would say this was their best
performance this season but with
Bryansford missing a number of key
players they know not to get carried
away.
• The Under 16’s where
up against Rostrevor on Thursday
night in what was always going to
be a tough match for them. Despite
producing a determined and committed
performance they weren’t able
to stem the flow of Rostrevors forwards.
• The Under 12’s kept
their 100% record going in the East
Down League play offs. This time
they had a comfortable win over
Castlewellan on Sunday evening.
• The club would like to
wish Roger Morgan and the rest of
the Minor County Panel all the best
for All Ireland Minor Championship
Quarter Final match against Tyrone
on Saturday.
