What a difference a week makes.
Last week the seniors could do no
wrong when they totally out played
Bryansford. This week with five
regulars missing from the squad
they were unable to match that performance.
While the seniors were struggling
the thirds were putting in one of
their best performances this season
to beat An Roicht in the Championship.
They then hosted Loughinisland in
the league while the seconds travelled
to Clonduff. The under 14’s
were in championship action this
week while the under 12s had a challenge
match in Armagh.
• The seniors travelled to
Liatriom on Friday for their local
derby hoping to pick up the points
that would all but secure their
place in the top four play-offs.
With 5 regular first team players
missing they started the game in
unusual fashion struggling from
the off. In fact by half time they
had only scored two points, Conor
Morgan and Donal Kane the scorers,
and trailed 0-02 to 0-10. In the
second half however they turned
things around Anthony Devlin hitting
the back of the night after only
four minutes to help get things
started. Mid way through the second
half and Devlin hit the net again
and with five minutes left they
trailed by a single point. However,
as they pushed forward looking for
the equaliser they began to leave
gaps in defence and Liatriom duly
took advantage and two goals from
Aideen O’Prey in the last
five minutes put pay to any hopes
of a come back. Good Luck to the
lads in the quarter final of the
County Championship against Mayobridge.
• The seconds had a local
derby game against Clonduff on Sunday
in a game that would go along way
to deciding the runners up spot
in Division One. In a closely fought
match it was the host team that
took the points on a score line
of 0-09 to 1-09.
• The thirds season appears
to be getting back on track. Following
a string of defeats and with half
their league team missing they travelled
to An Roicht for the first round
of the championship. Following this
win they then played host to Loughinisland
in the league as they tried to secure
division 2 status. As on so many
occasions this season the lads put
in a gritty and determined performance
to lead by five points at half time.
However that didn’t last as
they conceded two quick goals to
allow Loughinisland back in to the
game an in fact they lead by a point.
It took a point from Alphonus McEvoy
with the last kick of the game to
rescue a point from a game that
was well within their grasp.
• The U14’s were up
against Bryansford in the semi final
of the East Down Championship. In
a very tough game the lads struggled
to come to terms with the height
of some of the Bryansford boys and
couldn’t get to grips with
the game in midfield. However these
lads don’t lie down and worked
very hard in the first half to lead
by two points at half time. In the
second half Bryansford began to
assert their height advantage and
despite their continued determination
they in the end lost out on a score
line of 1-08 to 3-10.
• Commiserations to Roger
Morgan and the rest of the Down
Minor panel on their one point defeat
at the hands of Tyrone in the All
Ireland Semi Final.
