The
Magpies Notes - 19th July 2004
With the holiday period now in
full swing it seems an appropriate
time to look back at what has been
the season so far.
• The seniors started the
new season as league champions
and began the defence of their
title in determined fashion when
the easily account of Castlewellan
on the opening night. They followed
that win up with a superb win
over Clonduff when down to thirteen
men. In fact it took the visit
of newly promoted Longstone to
bring their unbeaten run to an
end. However they picked themselves
up, travelled to Rostrevor, and
came away with a moral boosting
win. Following a win over An Riocht,
Bryansford where next to knock
them of track but like previously
they just carried on and rattled
of three wins on the trot. There
biggest stumbling came near the
end of June win Castlewellan took
two points of them with the last
kick of the game, Clonduff stole
a draw in Own Roe Park despite
the home side missing sixteen
scoring chances and Mayobridge
gained a draw when it seemed the
magpies may have the game I there
control. However this team appears
to let nothing phase them as they
continue to bounce back which
Burren would find out when they
travelled to Kilcoo and found
themselves nine points down after
only five minutes. The final game
before the holidays saw them travel
to Longstone and with revenge
on their minds they duly with
six points to spare and go in
to the July fortnight sitting
top of division one. The lads
have clearly shown that they are
ready to defend their title, they
sit two points clear at the top
of division one. They have by
far the best scoring average of
all teams, they have the joint
highest goals scored and the second
highest points scored, the second
lowest goals conceded and by far
the lowest points conceded giving
them the best scoring and defensive
records in the league. It may
all be looking good but the lads
know the real work begins now
and as they build up to the championship
they know what’s still to
be done.
• The second’s season
to date hasn’t been as consisted
as the seniors but despite that
they remain well in contention
for silverware. They started of
the season in good fashion with
a hard fought draw against An
Roicht but soon came unstuck against
local rivals Liatriom. However,
they had well and truly wiped
that memory out of their minds
by the time they came to play
Mayobridge winning in emphatic
style by eight points. The Championship
kicked of in early May and they
had an impressive win over Kilclief
that was followed up with a league
win over Clonduff only to be out
done by Warrenpoint. By mid June
however they where beginning to
put together some good football
and narrowly beating Rostrevor
followed by a comfortable win
over Bryansford to hall themselves
back in to contention. By the
time they accounted for Liatroim
on a score line of 3-9 to 1-7
they where back in to second place
in the league. Like the seniors
the lads have the best score average
in the division and are now well
placed behind Mayobridge.
• The Thirds
season has been an impressive one.
Tipped by many to be struggling
at the foot of the table they have
really shown the rest of the teams
that they are not here to make up
the numbers. The season kicked in
to life for them when the travelled
to Longstone who where fielding
a number of their senior team. It
didn’t look good for them
early in the second half when the
trailed by 5 points but they showed
true grit and determination to turn
that around and pull of a much deserved
draw. Things then began to click
for them with big wins against Loughinisland,
Ballyholland, and a very impressive
win over Downpatrick put them up
in to third in the league. However,
the end of June and the start of
July has seen the team begin to
struggle defeats against Kilclief
and Annaclone saw them slip to fifth
but the significant and impressive
draw against Tullylish just before
the holidays gave them a moral booster
and seen them climb to fourth. The
lads have fought hard to get them
to the position they are in today
but also know that there is still
much work to be done and particularly
when championship time comes around
against An Riocht.
• So the season has been
good to the senior teams so far
and much work has gone in to these
teams to get them in to the top
positions in the county. However,
more work is needed and none of
the teams will be underestimating
that job. The work though isn’t
just for the players and mentors
these teams will be looking to
the supporters to cheer them on.
The club is one of the best if
not the best supported in the
County and we hope that support
will continue as the season begins
to hot up at all levels.
• Next
week we look back at the underage
season to date.
