The Magpies Notes - 14th June 2004

With the seconds and thirds inactive this last week it was up to the seniors to fly the flag for the senior teams. All the underage teams were in action but all with mixed results the minors and U12s the only ones winning.

  • The senior’s had a visit to Castlewellan at the weekend for the start of the second round of the league. The game started of at a hectic pace with both teams missing chances. While the town opened the scoring, two points from Conor Laverty, and one from Gary McEvoy helped the magpies to an early lead only to concede a goal a minute later. When Donal Kane pointed from long range it left the half time score 0-4 to 1-2. A minute in to the second half and Anthony Devlin was pulled to the ground and a penalty was awarded, but when the magpies failed to convert the spot kick it was the town who added a further two points. It took 12 minutes for Kilcoo to get a score and again it came from Laverty with Donal Kane also pointing and the quickly the sides were level. From then on it was pretty much tit for tat and as the town opened up a small gap even an inspirational score from Gary McEvoy and a late Laverty point wasn’t enough as the final score line read 0-11 to 1-9. It wasn’t all bad news at least a Kilcoo man won the half time draw.
  • The minors built on last weeks win over Teconnaught when they had a win over Loughinisland. In an entertaining match their where good performances from Sean Kelly, Paul Greenan and Alphonus and Cathal McEovy.
  • The Under 16s were in action in the Championship last week and despite some determined play from the whole team they just didn’t have enough as they lost out to Ardglass.
  • The under 14’s had a real fight on their hands against Mayobridge last week in the league. In a very entertaining match watched by a good crowd the lads just ran out of steam in the end. Narrowly trailing for most of the first half some inspirational play by Paul Devlin helped the lads keep in touch and when they finally took the lead the lads had given their all as Mayobridge won with 8 points to spare. This was a very good team performance and everyone gave their all and but for some misses in the second half as well as some decisions not going their way it could have been different.
  • The U12s continued their winning form in the East Down league when they easily accounted of Kilclief on Sunday. The lads remain unbeaten.
  • At the moment the club appears to be spending more time talking about injuries than other things. Within the last week two under age players have broken bones. The club, mentors and players would like extend best wishes to both Ryan Johnston and Paul Higgins following their injuries and look forward to their return.
  • Congratulation to Roger Morgan and the rest of the Minor county panel following Sundays win over Armagh in the Ulster Championship semi final.
  • The local rumour mill has it that apparently the club is on the look out for someone willing to support our mentors to undertake some keep fit exercises. I wonder what the mentors might have to say about that.
