The seniors remain top of Division
One despite dropping a point at
home to Clonduff. The seconds and
thirds had mixed results; the U16s
had an impressive display against
An Roicht and the U14s against Burren
• Following last weeks narrow
defeat to Castlewellan the seniors
had an opportunity to bounce back
when they hosted Clonduff at the
weekend. This was a game that the
magpies dominated in terms of play
but were unable to capitalise through
scores. In fact it was the inability
of both teams to score that was
the talking point of the match.
Conor Laverty got the magpies on
the score board after only 2 minutes
but from then on they struggled
to get the ball between the posts.
A tally of ten wides at the break
showed what the score line could
have been, add to that at least
two clearly goal scoring opportunities
and the game could have been all
so different. At the other end the
constant giving away of free kicks
meant that Clonduff were able to
stay in touch and when Gary McEvoy
point on the stroke of half time
the sides went in to the break level.
The second half got of to an explosive
start when Anthony Devlin rattled
the net with a superb shot to set
the fans a light. However just when
it looked like Kilcoo were taking
control the free kick tally began
to rise again and Clonduff were
level. At this point it was Clonduff
who were missing scores and most
of them from frees. With two minutes
to go Gary McEvoy put the magpies
in front again only to see Clonduff
level in injury time on a score
line of 1-8 to 0-11. Next week it’s
of to Mayobridge for what promises
to be an entertaining match lets
hope the lads will have their scoring
boots back on.
• The seconds picked up some
valuable points over the last week.
First up it was Rostrevor and despite
trailing going in to the final minutes
of the match they some how pulled
of a deserved draw. Then it was
the visit of local rivals Bryansford
who were the opposition and on like
the Rostrevor match they comfortably
won this one.
• The thirds also had a busy
week they hosted Downpatrick last
week and despite leading by seven
points at half time they stumbled
across the finish. In a game of
two halves they totally out played
Downpatrick with some impressive
football and score taking Paddy
Kelly, Michael Kane and John A McEvoy
leading the way. In the second half
Downpatrick picked their game up
and began to run at Kilcoo but the
lads dug deep and held on for a
deserved win. On Sunday the travelled
to Kilclief and what a contrast
of fortunes this time they struggled
from the off and were on able to
find any rhythm to their play and
struggled to take their scores.
However with two minutes left the
trailed by four points and a Paddy
Murrray goal and a Paul Kane point
levelled the match and a steal looked
to be on the cards, but Kilclief
weren’t finished and they
deservedly won on a score line of
1-5 to 1-9.
• The Under 16s had a hard
match against An Roicht during the
week. With the squad limited because
of mounting injuries they put in
a fantastic display of football
and determinations against a team
tipped for honours. The lads were
level in this match coming up to
half time but in the second half
they had given their all and ran
out of steam. This was a very good
team display but certain people
deserve a mention not least Rory
Morgan who put in a fantastic display
in goal and kept them in the game
at times. Peter McClean who work
hard through out and his goal in
the first half lifted the team and
Sean Kelly who kept the Kingdom
defence on their toes throughout
the whole game.
• The under 14’s were
away to Burren this week and put
in another determined performance.
Despite leading at half time the
lads were unable to drive their
advantage home and in the end were
beaten. It’s been a good week
for Rory Morgan who put in another
good performance, this time for
the U14s, and so to do the usual
suspects who continue to perform
well.
