The Magpies Notes - 13th September 2004

Eight years ago the club collected their first County title in almost 70 years when the U16’s beat Ballyholland in Burren. I wonder how many of the supporters arriving at the U12 match on Saturday, again in Burren, would have dreamed that the club would have gone on to win all county titles up to and including the U21’s.

• The U12’s performance on Saturday showed that the club is still one of the leading clubs in the county at underage level. This team has swept aside everything in their way. However against Glenn in the County Final they were up against their biggest challenge to date. Both teams put in a tremendous effort but in the end it was the extra pace and skill of the magpies forward line that did the damage. The game was hard hitting one and both defences where outstanding in the first half with Ryan Johnston getting the only goal of the half to lead 1-3 to 0-2. In the second half both defences continued to hold strong but as the game went on Kilcoos forward line began to find more space and the score line began to rise. On the rare occasions that Glenn was able to find away through the tight magpies defence Niall Kane was there to pull of some superb stops. The club should like to congratulate the players and mentors for a fantastic achievement. Winning a County title is always fantastic but winning two in three years makes this one much sweeter. But this wasn’t achieved with ease in fact it was achieved with hard work, dedication, lots of hours spent in the park training and skilful football. The club is proud of both players and mentors in the way they conducted themselves throughout the competition and also thank our supporters for turning out to support the young lads on the day.

• The club should like to wish Colleen Grant the very best of luck for Sundays All Ireland Junior Camogie final. No doubt she will do her club proud.

• The Semi Finals of this year Scor na nOg takes place in early November and the club would like to have entries in as many competitions as possible. Therefore anyone wishing to help organise or participate in this year’s event should contact Brendan Gribben ASAP. The club has a proud tradition in Scor na nOg and would like to see this develop.
