Kilcoo had to battle all the way
to overcome a determined Downpatrick
side in the Down SFC clash at St.
Malachy’s Park, Castlwellan on
Thursday 10th of August – final
score 1-10 to 1-7 in favour of the
Kilcoo side.
The opening half was played at a
fast pace with the Kilcoo side
holding the advantage for most of
the half and leading at the interval
by 0-6 to 1-1. Just before the
half-time break both sides had a
player red-carded, although it was
far from a dirty game.
Downpatrick started the second-half
in determined fashion and were
denied an early goal when the Kilcoo
’keeper Emmet Devlin made a great
stop from Caolin Boyd. They were
then hit on the counter-attack when
within a minute of their miss,
Kilcoo went upfield and Gary McEvoy
finished to the net.
This score more or less ended the
game as a contest, although to the
credit of the Downpatrick side they
battled to the final whistle and
finished the game with the last two
points.
Alas, for them it was too little too
late, as Kilcoo qualified for a
quarter-final place.
