Notes 8th Sept 2008
The Cill Darach under-14 side,
which an amalgamation of Killyleagh
and Darragh Cross cruised to
the title with an impressive
performance over Loughinisland
on Thursday night at St Mochai's
Park. Going into the game Cill
Darach sat top of the table,
knowing that anything other
than defeat would clinch the
league, and having only won
by a point in the away match
against the Blues, they were
taking nothing for granted.
Jarlath Flynn slotted over an
early point for the home side,
but Loughinisland almost hit
the net in their first attack.
Gary Murray saved superbly high
to his left to prevent the goal.
A free for Loughinisland levelled
the game, before Cill Darach
took control with points from
Shane Murray and Conor Noble
and goals from Jarlath Flynn
and Joseph McClements. Loughinisland
came back with a point, but
scores from Shane Murray (2)
and Conan Russell gave the league
leaders a ten point advantage.
Two points for the Island late
in the half left them trailing
by 2-6 to 0-4.
Cill Darach came out of the
blocks brilliantly after the
restart, and had added fifteen
points to their lead within
ten minutes. Conan Russell pointed
twice, with Jarlath Flynn hammering
in his second goal after a rebound
off the post. Shane Murray added
two magnificent goals, with
another fine goal slotted home
from Conor Noble. Loughinisland
only managed a goal and a point
in the second half as they were
steamrollered by the home side.
Cill Darach added points from
Conan Russell and Conor Keenan
and a third goal for Shane Murray
to complete the rout. Kevin
McClements, Chris Sullivan,
Jarlath Flynn and Gary and Shane
Murray were impressive on the
night, but the whole squad played
their part in a successful season
for Marcus Miskelly's young
team. East Down Board member
Martin Fitzsimons presented
the league trophy to captain
Conan Russell after the game.
The panel was - Gary Murray,
Jamie Daly, Sean O'Callaghan,
Jon Hardy, Chris Sullivan, Joe
McKinney, James Murray, Joe
McClements (1-0), Kevin McClements,
Conan Russell (0-4), Conor Keenan
(0-1), Shane Murray (3-4), Eamon
Sweeney, Conor Noble (1-1),
Jarlath Flynn (2-1), Fintan
Murray, Conor Turner, Mattie
McAleenan
