Quarter Final win for Liatroim

Liatroim
Fontenoys and Loughinisland turned
in a thrilling Down SFC quarter-final
at the Castlwellan venue on Tuesday
evening 24th August with the Liatroim
side emerging winners in a well-contested
encounter by 1-11 to 1-7.
There
was very little between two well-matched
sides in the opening half and the
sides were level at the break Loughinisland
1-3, Liatroim Fontenoys 0-6. The
turning point in the game came seven
minutes into the second-half when
the Loughinisland side were awarded
a penalty, but county star, Dan
Gordon’s shot hit the post
and went wide.
However,
Liatroim Fontenoys regained their
composure after this let-off and
a fine move involving three players
ended with Aiden Brown sending to
the Loughinisland net to put his
side in the driving seat. From there
to the closing minutes of the game
it was point for point. Liatroim
finished the tie in impressive fashion
with points from county players
P.P. McCartan and Aiden O’Prey
for a four points success and a
meeting with former champions, Mayobridge
in the semi-final.
Two
of the outstanding players in this
game were countymen Dan Gordon for
the losing Loughinisland side who
finished the game with a personal
tally of four points, and over the
hour gave an exhibition of high-fielding
in the midfield area.
Close
behind him has to be his county
colleague on the Down side, Liam
Doyle who worked tirelessly for
the winning side, and also chipped
in with four points, all coming
from frees. Two of these came late
in the game when his side were under
real pressure from a resurgent Loughinisland
side.
