Championship QF: Mayobridge 6.10 Kilcoo 1-06 - 01/09/2003
Defending champions, Mayobridge, had little trouble disposing
of the challenge from Kilcoo in this Down SFC quarter final at Hilltown on Sunday
31st August when they amassed an impressive winning tally of 6-10 to 1-6.
While
the first half was evenly contested and a spirited display from the losers gave
the champions some trouble during this first half where the Kilcoo midfield pair
of Aiden Brannigan and Declan Rooney held the upperhand. Kilcoo had the first
goal of the game a Gary McEvoy twice taken penalty whose first attempt was saved
by Mayobridge keeper, Sean Featherstone.
It was veteran star,
Mickey Linden who set the wheels in motion for the champions when just three of
the first half remaining a superb Linden pass was punched to the net by Robbie
Coulter. The contest was evenly balanced at the interval with the scoreline of
1-6 to 1-3 in favour of Mayobridge.
The second half was only
twenty second old, when disaster struck for the losers as Benny Coulter's pin
point pass found Linden who blasted the ball to the back of the Kilcoo net. A
quick response from Kilcoo with points from Gary McEvoy and Conor Laverty proved
only to be a hollow challenge as the winners took total dominance. Goals by Glenn
McMahon in the twelfth minute and Robbie Coulter Coulter in the seventeenth and
twenty minutes ended this game as a serious contest.
Linden
had the final say with his side's six goal in the dying minute of the game.
