Dual
role for Mickey Linden
Thursday, October 07, 2004
The
Down SFC Final at Newry between Mayobridge
and Annaclone on Sunday 10th October
will be a very special occasion for
one of the best footballers ever to
come out of the Mourne county, All-Star
Mickey Linden.
On
this occasion the multi-talented 42
year-old Linden will be combining
his pre-match preparatory duties with
his role as the sides versatile corner-forward.
This
season, Linden is managing the Mayobridge
side along with another former Down
favourites John Murphy, and the side
includes among others the Coulter
brothers and Ronan Sexton.
Their
opponents on Sunday, Annaclone are
the surprise team of the season in
Down senior football. They have had
a tremendous season to date, they
are currently top of Division 2 League
table and almost assured of Division
One football next season, plus they
have reached the senior county final.
Their
best-known player is Sigerson Cup
star, Aiden Fegan and such is their
enthusiasm and commitment that they
are now amongst the best senior club
sides in the county at the present
time. They would love to win the title
on Sunday and take the number one
spot. However, it is a big ask especially
coming up against a Mayobridge side
who have dominated Down senior club
football in recent seasons, and have
set their sights once again to try
and win that coveted Ulster club title.
For
the present Linden and his players
will be concentrating on the job on
hand this Sunday in Newry. They are
expecting a tough competitive game
from this Annaclone side who play
very much as a team and won’t
be found wanting for effort and determination.
Despite
this, the experience the Mayobridge
side have gathered up in recent seasons
will stand them
