Mayobridge on course for league and
championship double
Friday, October 29, 2004
County senior champions, Mayobridge
are on course for the league and championship
double following their SFL semi-final
defeat of near-neighbours, Burren
on Tuesday night 26th October under
lights in St. Patrick’s Park,
Newcastle.
They now meet the
league champions Kilcoo in the final
- a repeat of their recent SFC semi-final
meeting when Mayobridge came out on
top.
The champions started
the game on Tuesday night without
their services of two of their key
forwards Benny Coulter and player-manager
Mickey Linden - both of whom were
involved with the Irish International
Rules side last Sunday in Croke Park
and their great success over Australia
in the second test.
Both players came
on in the final quarter of this league
semi-final clash as Mayobridge possessted
too much power and teamwork for a
young but talented Burren side. Star
of the Mayobridge side was half-forward
Noel Sexton, while county defender
Brendan Grant excelled in defence.
County senior player
Eoin McCartan worked hard in the Burren
defence and looked dangerous at times,
but overall the Burren side lacked
the forward power and cutting edge
to trouble a confident Mayobridge
side.
