Division 1:
Burren 1-10 Mayobridge 3-05
County champions Mayobridge left
Burren on Thursday night with both
points after dramatically scoring1-1
in injury to steal the game from their
close neighbours. In fairness Burren
played the better football but as it
so often happens in Gaelic football,
the best team doesn’t always win.
Eoin mc Carten opened the scoring with
a fine effort from near the sideline,
before Eamon Mc Govern palmed the ball
in the net. County panellist Declan
Rooney also chipped in with two lovely
points, before Mayobridge realised a
match was taking place. A highball
form Benny coulter seen a mistake in
the Burren goalmouth, Adrian Barry was
first to react to scramble the ball
over the line. Both team scored two
points each and the final score went
to James mc Govern, with a fantastic
free from the right hand side.
Half time Mayobridge 1-03 Burren 1-05
Burren certainly had the best chances
in the first half but The Bridge felt
that they hadn’t got going, and were
first to score in the second half.
Conrad Fegan had the ball in the
Burren net after nine minutes, scoring
soccer style to put the sky blues in
front for the first time in the match.
But as with all good Burren teams,
they certainly weren’t going to lie
down, and regained the lead with
points from James mc Govern and Declan
Rooney, the latter a mammoth score
from 50 yards. Michael Walsh equalised
for the bridge, before Burren began to
dominate, Eoin Mc Carten who was now
playing further out the field, scored
the best score of the game, collecting
the ball in midfield, carried it, gave
a one two before coolly slotting it
over the bar. James Mc Govern and
Declan Rooney lengthened the gap till
three points, and Burren supporters
must have thought that the victory was
theirs, but the bridge didn’t read the
script and a Michael Walsh free was
landed in the Burren square and Down
captain Benny Coulter was on hand to
fist the ball to the net. Mayobridge
then collected the kick- out, and the
ball was passed to john Caldwell who
for an 18 year old was the calmest man
in St Mary’s park, as he sent the ball
over the bar, and sent the bridge fans
home with smiles from ear to ear.
Mayobridge who were late starting back
this season, certainly have plenty of
work to do, but Mickey linden, will
certainly be happy with the
performances of Brendan grant, both
Eoghan woods and Conrad Fegan in
mid-field, and John Caldwell. James mc
Carten on the other-hand will be
disappointed with the result, but will
take heart form, performances from
both his brothers Daniel and Eoin,
Declan Rooney and James Mc govern.
