Portaferry's hurling championship hopes still alive! 11/10/2003
Down
Senior Hurling Final: Portaferry 1-09 Ballygalget 1-09
Portaferry's hopes of winning their fourth Down senior hurling
title in a row are still on track after they battled hard to force a replay against
a determined Ballygalget side in the final on Sunday 5th October.
The
replay now takes place this Sunday at the Ballycran venue, and is sure to be another
interesting encounter. Portaferry, were strong favourites to win the drawn match
last Sunday, but in the end they needed a late free to earn them a second chance.
Ballygalget will feel they deserved more, and it was a game they should
have won. Gareth Johnston got their only goal in a low-scoring 1-9 apiece draw,
while county star Johnny McGrattan scored six points.
Paul Braniff was
the 'main man' for Ballygalget finishing the game with a personal tally of 1-6,
while former All-Star Gerard McGrattan chipped in with two points.
With
very little between the sides the last day, it will be a hard one to call again
on Sunday. No doubt, top scorers on both sides Johnny McGrattan (Portaferry) and
Paul Braniff (Ballygalget) will have a major influence on the eventual outcome.
A hesitant vote goes to Portaferry, as their mentors feel they can improve greatly
on last Sunday's performance, and are glad to get a second chance!
