Down Hurling
Division 1 Portaferry 7-19 v
Kilclief 3-8 Tuesday 15th May
07
Portaferry continued their
relentless pursuit of the Walter
Moreland Cup with a comprehensive
23 point victory over Kilclief in
St Patrick's Park. Portaferry were
on top in every sector of the
field and in corner forward Nigel
kelly who finished with a total of
1-9 from play they had a match
winner. Portaferry were quick to
get out of the blocks with Aaron
O' Prey on top in midfield and
early points from Niall Magee,
Sean Young and Paul Smyth. A
flurry of goals the first from
Nigel Kelly and Noel Sands give
Portaferry a convincing 10 point
lead at half time. Kilclief though
they tried hard lacked the stick
work and speed of their more
illustrious opponents but in
County player Fintan Conway they
got most of their scores from
placed balls. The second half
continued as the first with Martin
Mallon and Connel Trainor securing
early points and Paul Rodgers
adding to the tally. Kilclief had
a 10 minute spell where they added
some pressure and got goals but it
only added respectability to the
score line. Richard Murray killed
the game as a contest with a
rasping 40 yard drive into the top
corner. Portaferry remain unbeaten
after 4 games and are on course to
reclaim the League title which
they surrendered to Ballycran last
year. Best for Portaferry included
Aaron O Prey, Nigel Kelly, Niall
Magee, Fergal Rodgers and
substitute Martin Mallon. Kilclief
in Fintan Conway was the only
player that caught the eye for the
opposition.
