Down Minor
Hurling League Friday 4th July
08:
Portaferry 0-09 v Ballygalget
1-07
Ballygalget erased the memory
of their previous league encounter
when they were defeated by 13
points with a deserved 1 point
victory over Portaferry at St
Patrick's Park. Ballygalget started
the brightest with points from
their elusive corner forward Danny
Toner and Conor Doran who provided
accuracy from the dead ball. The
home side after a ragged start
began to settle and responded
with long rang scores from Shane
Conlan and an excellent point
form the impressive Ryan Miskelly.
John Merron exhibited some wonderful
fielding as half time approached
they led 5 points to 3.
The first quarter of the second
half the Ports hit a purple patch
with further points from Brendan
Coleman and Eunan Mc Mullan as
they raced into a 4 point lead.
The men in green and white rallied
with Ben Toner providing great
ball into Danny Toner who despite
suffering a head injury proved
to be a constant thorn in the
Port's defence. A mix up in the
Portaferry goal led to a Ballygalget
goal and it was this score that
proved decisive. The Port's responded
with Brendan Coleman hitting the
woodwork with a rasping shot whist
in injury time a Michael Doran
penalty was saved and Ballygalget
held out for a fully merited win.
For Portaferry this was a game
that they controlled but it was
Ballygalget's hunger that saw
them through. For the home side
John Merron and Chris Collins
in defence were outstanding whist
Ryan Miskelly was a threat in
attack. Ballygalget's Ben Toner
and Conor Doran were excellent
but Danny Toner with his pace
and accuracy was the real match
winner.
