Portaferry defied the prematch
favourites tag of their opponents
Liatroim to secure a hugely
impressive 9 point success.
Played in glorious sunshine
with a large crowd in attendance
on the beautiful shores of Strangford
Lough Portaferry blew their
opponents away with a blistering
opening ten minute period. Two
early goals one from Nigel Kelly
who was a thorn in the Liatroim
defence all day and the other
from Richard Murray stunned
the Fontenoys. A further point
from Kevin Mc Carthy built up
a 7 point lead for the men in
blue and gold. Liatroim's response
was to add points from the placed
ball of John Brown who finished
the day with a personal tally
of 1-6. Portaferry however continued
to hit the Fontenoys where it
hurt tackling in numbers and
and demonstrating all the fine
skills of this game in hooking
and blocking to lead at half
time by 5 points.
The second half started as the
first with Conor Mageean scoring
a brilliant goal after rifling
the sloithar to the top of the
net. With John Merron and Aaron
O Prey sweeping up all the loose
ball in the half back line and
with Joe Kelly steadfast at
full back Liatroim scores were
at a premium. The Ports continued
to tag on points with Shane
Conlan deadly accurate from
the placed long ball. A late
goal from John Brown gave the
Fontenoys some hope but this
was obliterated with 2 fabulous
points from veteran Noel Sands
who was introduced for the last
10 minutes and a point from
team captain Connel Trainor.
This victory for the men in
blue and gold was made all the
more sweet as 6 of their starting
15 were minors. Liatroim simply
had no match for their superior
stickwork and hunger. John Merron
was the stand out player in
defence whilst Conor Mc Carthy
and Paul Smyth worked of their
socks in midfield. Up front
Connel Trainor with early first
time ball to live wire Nigel
Kelly and the accuracy of Conor
Maggean ensured that this Championship
was returning to the Ards. Liatroim
tried valiantly through chief
scorer John Brown, half back
Declan Burns and Liam Morgan
but their efforts were in vain
as Gerard Mc Shane presented
the Intermediate Championship
trophy to Portaferry for 2008.
