McGonigle goal sinks Portaferry 23/10/2006
Former county dual star Geoffrey McGonigle scored the only goal as Derry champions Dungiven defeated Portaferry of Down to qualify for this year’s Ulster club hurling final at Casement Park.

Dungiven…..1-12  Portaferry......0-11

Recalling his 37th minute major, McGonigle said: “I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Stephen Murray (the Portaferry full back) misjudged the dropping ball and I nipped round him. I was glad to see it go into the net.”

Portaferry settled quickest with Gerard Adair and Niall Magee both hitting points inside the first three minutes. McGonigle and Phelim Kelly replied for Kevin Lynch’s, but Portaferry went on to lead by 0-7 to 0-6 at the break thanks to Paul Rodgers’ strike on the stroke of half-time.

McGonigle’s goal gave Dungiven a 1-8 to 0-7 advantage and they defended superbly to keep their noses in front until the finish.

Tom Coulter piled on the misery for Portaferry with a couple of superb long-range points while Paddy Monan also impressed for the winners with some superb striking.
