goal sinks Portaferry
23/10/2006
Former county dual
star Geoffrey McGonigle scored the
only goal as Derry champions
Dungiven defeated Portaferry of
Down to qualify for this year’s
Ulster club hurling final at
Casement Park.
Dungiven…..1-12
Portaferry......0-11
Recalling his 37th minute major,
McGonigle said: “I just happened
to be in the right place at the
right time. Stephen Murray (the
Portaferry full back) misjudged
the dropping ball and I nipped
round him. I was glad to see it go
into the net.”
Portaferry settled quickest with
Gerard Adair and Niall Magee both
hitting points inside the first
three minutes. McGonigle and
Phelim Kelly replied for Kevin
Lynch’s, but Portaferry went on to
lead by 0-7 to 0-6 at the break
thanks to Paul Rodgers’ strike on
the stroke of half-time.
McGonigle’s goal gave Dungiven a
1-8 to 0-7 advantage and they
defended superbly to keep their
noses in front until the finish.

Down SHC: Ballygalget 0-17
1-10 Portaferry
Portaferry's hopes of claiming
a fourth successive Down Hurling
title were dashed by a hungrier
Ballygalget side at Ballycran.
The holders failed to built
on a great start which saw
John Convery hitting the only
goal of the game in the third
minute. However, some accurate
free-taking by Johnny McGrattan
helped Ballygalget level the
contest a 0-7 to 1-4 by the
interval and with Gareth Johnson
dominating the midfield exchanges,
they took a firm grip on the
contest in the second period.
Tom Coulter piled on the misery
for Portaferry with a couple
of superb long-range points
while Paddy Monan also impressed
for the winners with some
superb striking.

championship
In the Down I.H.C., last

winners Clonduff produced
the shock of the domestic
hurling season to date by
defeating Kilclief - who contested
the senior hurling championship
semi-final last season. Portaferry
proved too strong for Castlewellan
in their quarter-final game.

for the May 18th clash with
the Saffrons.
Braniff is one of the leading
players in the current Down
set-up, and he will be a huge
