VILLAGE SALUTES SCHOOLBOY STARS

·        A big attendance gathered in the Rostrevor clubrooms on last Wednesday evening to salute the boys of St Mary’s primary School, who had , earlier that day, brought great pride to the village by coming so close to adding the Ulster Primary Schools title to the county crown they had won in such fine fashion a few weeks previously. For most of Wednesdays enthralling final in Abbey Park, Armagh, Rostrevor had been the match for a very talented Dungannon team. Rostrevor were actually pressing for the equalising point, when Dungannon counter-attacked swiftly in the last minute to score the clinching goal. Though beaten 1-9 to 3-6 by a strong Tyrone team, the local schoolboys only added to their reputation with this stirring performance.Patrick Morgan scored the Rostrevor goal, and Lee Clerkin contributed three points, while Paul Morgan, Jonathan Connolly, Ryan Cousins and Tomas Mulholland all stood out in a gallant display.

·        The Schoolboys just stole the thunder of the other top performers of the week, the club minors, who, the same evening, were restoring their prospects of winning the All-County Minor League, with a tremendous performance in Dunavil. Reds had finished three or four goals adrift of their great rivals when the sides met in the first round in Pettit Park. But this time , Rostrevor made light of the absence of the six County minors with a 1-7 to 1-5 victory. Reds trailed by 0-4 to 1-3 at half time, but were galvanised by a second half goal from Richie Reynolds. Others to stand out in a marvellous team performance were Colm Murney, Conor Magee, Anthony Donnan, Colin Farrell and Sean Mackin. The only downside to a memorable evening was the injury to under 16 star, Sean Magee, which is likely to rule him out of action for the rest of the season.

·        The loss of Sean Magee was a serious one for the under 16s, who faced a very difficult tie against Warrenpoint in the championship on Tuesday. As it turned out, Rostrevor had to use up their entire seasons quota of luck to survive the fiery challenge of a well-motivated Warrenpoint team, who squandered a host of chances before going down 1-9 to 1-11 in a grandstand finish. Sean Mackins brilliance [he scored 0-7] was the main reason why Rostrevor are through to the next round . Others are a good goal from Stevie McVeigh, and top-notch defensive displays from Shane Murney, Eddie O’Hare, Gareth Clarke and Damien Magee.

·        The under 14 boys had a difficult week. They battled back with two final quarter goals to cut Boscos lead to a single point in the championship in Newry, but in the end, succumbed on a 3-6 to 3-10 scoreline. Cormac Parr, Mickey Mcveigh and Stephen Morgan hit the Rostrevor goals. Then they had to travel to top-of-the-table Ballyholland in the league on Monday. This time they came away with regrets over a missed penalty as Harps won an exciting game by 4-13 to 4-9.Stephen McAteer, Stephen Morgan and Mickey McVeigh all showed well.

·        A last minute goal from Eimear McGeough gave the under 14 girls a thrilling 4-2 to 1-9 win over Annaclone.Eimear scored two of the Rostrevor goals. The other scorers were Ciara Taylor and Katie Farrell, who each picked up a goal and a point.

·        The under 12s had an easy home win over Clann na Banna. Patrick Morgan and Caolan Mooney were the stars in a 7-15 to 0-1 victory.

·        Patrick McGreevy scored the goal and Gary Farrell hit four points in a tight 1-8 to 0-8 win over Clonduff in the Premier Reserve League. Others to shine were Niall Magee and Adrian Magee.

·        The club is expecting another successful evening in St Bronaghs when the second Poker Holdem competition gets under way in the clubrooms at 6 pm on Sunday.

·        Best wishes go to Martin Cole and Sean Farrell for Downs big championship date with Derry in Pairc Esler on Sunday afternoon. The club’s involvement in Fridays Ulster minor semi-final in Crossmaglen is even greater. Colm Clerkin, Eamonn McConville, Conor Mackin , Gerard McCartan  and Gary Magee have all been named on the minor team which will line out against Cavan. Paddy Mooney will be on the subs bench.
