Rostrevor Notes - 05th June 2005

ST BRONAGHS NEWS

·        This weeks big achievers were the boys of St Marys Primary School who brought the 2005 Down primary schools title back to the village with a 4-4 to 1-4 victory over neighbours St Dallans of Warrenpoint in the County Final at Castlewellan last Saturday. It was a great all-round performance from the boys, especially in defence, where Patrick Morgan, Stephen Doyle and Conor Doyle were all outstanding. Jordan Fegan[2-0] and Ryan Cousins [1-2] were the forward heroes and midfielder Lee Clerkin  crowned a fine display by scoring Rostrevors first half goal

·        The clubs senior team overcame the absence of prominent players like Ciaran Sloan, Eddie Magee, Conor Daly, Martin Sherry and Adrian Mackin by producing their best form of the season in a 2-11 to 2-3 win over Bryansford in a lively game at Pettit Park. Dermot Mackin was in top form and scored Rostrevors first goal as they moved into a 1-8 to 0-2 lead by half time. They were taken aback by two Bryansford goals early in the second half, but recovered well to win, with Joe Fegan adding the second goal from the penalty spot. Other top performers for Rostrevor were young Patrick McGreevey, who scored 0-2, and Fintan McBreen at midfield.

·        The reserves are just two points behind league leaders Kilcoo, but with a game in hand following an exciting 2-11 to 0-16 win over An Riocht at Dunavil

·        The minors had some of their county players back for the trip to Carryduff in the All-County League last Wednesday. Eamonn McConville and Conor Mackin were injured and had to sit it out, but Collie Clerkin hit three points in a 0-15 to 0-12 win over a good Carryduff side. It took a couple of fine saves from Padraig Mulholland to see Rostrevor through. The home side led 0-8 to 0-5 at half time, but Reds fought back with fine displays from James Clerkin [0-3], Gerard McCartan, Ryan Watt and Colm Murney.

·        The under 16s had no game this Tuesday, but travel to Longstone in the championship on Wednesday. Good luck, lads!

·        The under 14s won a thriller against Glenn in Pettit park on Monday  by 4-7 to 2-10. Mickey McVeigh scored 2-3, with the other goals from Paudie Parr and Tomas O Dubhain. Man of the match was centre half back Stephen Morgan who gave a tremendous display as  a talented Glenn team piled on the second half pressure.

·        The under 12s had a difficult assignment in the championship away to a Bosco side who were at the top of Division Two in the league. Bur Rostrevor were in brilliant form in Newry and progressed to the next round on a 6-10 to 1-1 scoreline.

·        Good luck to the clubs under 10 team, who defend their Mitchels Blitz title next Saturday in Newry

·        Commiserations to the under 16 girls team who bowed out of the championship against a much more experienced Byansford side at Newcastle on Sunday. That ends the season for the under 16s, and they and manager Christopher Doyle deserve to be congratulated for laying the foundations for what we hope will be a successful future for girls football in Rostrevor.
