Rostrevor
Notes - 25th April 2005
·
Disappointment for the club’s senior
team last Friday when they fell to their
first defeat of the season against a
very determined and well-organized
Castlewellan side at Pettit Park. Reds
were taken by surprise in the first half
when some great long-range shooting from
Castlewellan’s Fintan McGreevey left
them 0-3 to 0-7 adrift at half time. The
introduction of subs martin Sherry ,
Martin Cole, Colm Clerkin and Dermot
Mackin helped things in the second half,
but not enough as the visitors held out
for a deserved 0-12 to 0-10 victory.
Conor Daly was Rostrevor’s top scorer
with 0-4. Adrian Mackin, Lloyd Parr and
Martin Sherry scored two points apiece.
Rostrevor’s next fixture is away to An
Riocht in Dunavil on Thursday evening.
·
The Reserves provided some consolation.
Their 2-15 to 1-8 win over Saval leaves
them still hot on the heels of joint
leaders Burren and Mayobridge. Turlough
Murphy and Tommy Mone got the Rostrevor
goals in the first half.Gary Farrell
[0-4] , Niall Magee [0-3] and Patrick
McGreevey were also amongst the scorers,
with Paul Magee again impressive in the
defence.
·
Frustration for the minors. They beat
Saval, Clann na Banna and An Riocht on
their way to the South Down Feis Sevens
final. But when an objection was lodged
alleging an administrative irregularity
in the Rostrevor teamsheet, the mentors
decided to withdraw from the competition
and the title went to Clonduff by
default. They had better luck in the
All-County league beating a strong
Burren team by seven points.
·
The under 16s had no official fixture
last week but played an enjoyable
challenge with St. John’s.Richie
Reynolds, Daniel Flanagan and Paul Burns
impreesed in a 5-10 to 1-3 win.
·
The under 14’s also had a good result,
winning by 2-8 to 1-7 away to Newry
Shamrocks.
·
Team of the week has to be the under
12s, who enthralled a good crowd with an
exciting draw at home to a highly rated
Burren side. Rostrevor found themselves
two goals down in the first five minutes
but played with great skill and
character to overtake their opponents
who were grateful for a late equaliser
to share the points. Outstanding in an
impressive Rostrevor performance were
Caolan Mooney, who scored 0-4 from
midfield, Gerard Magee at centre half
back and captain, Martin Grant, from
Killowen.
·
Rostrevor are strongly represented on
the recently announced Down minor panel.
Eamonn McConville, Colm Clerkin, Conor
Mackin, Patrick Mooney, Gary Magee and
Gerard McCartan have all been selected
by Mark Turley in his panel for the
Ulster Championship game v Tyrone on
April 22nd.
·
On the social side, well done to the
ladies football teams who ran a highly
successful “Leg-waxing” fundraiser in
the club rooms last week. Last Friday
there was also a successful fundraising
night in support of Newry Hospice.

The under 14 girls were well beaten by a
good Saval team on Tuesday evening,
despite the best efforts of Michelle
Morgan, Colleen Magee and Eimear
McGeough. Their next fixture will be
away to Mayobridge on Sunday[12.30] .
The under 16 girls have a refixture v
Drumgath on a day next week to be
