REDS REDEEMED
Burren 0-9 Rostrevor 0-9
So how is it that a team can go out
a week agao at home to Mayobridge
and give a diabolical account of itself
and then come to Burren a week later
with [on paper] a much weaker side
and so completely restore its reputation?
A funny game football, though Burren
will hardly see the joke this week,
especially since they failed to score
at all from play in the second half
of Fridays surprisingly one-sided
defeat.
VINDICATED
For Rostrevor, the vindication was
distinguished by a couple of super
goals. The first, after twenty-one
minutes was a thing of rare beauty.
It was made by a pass of brilliance
by Joe Fegan, who was Burrens chief
tormentor all evening.Joe’s
pass from the right was delivered
with such pace and precision that
Dermot Mackin found himesly completely
unmarked on the 20 meter line. Dermot
quickly appreciated that a pass of
this quality deserved a finish to
match. And he gleefully despatched
a searing drop-kick which racked the
back of the Burren net before Mark
Rocks could even lift a finger.
AMENDS
That really ought to have been Dermots
second goal; a minute earlier he had
settled for a point when Eddie Magees
adventure possibly merited better
reward. But it left Rostrevor 1-2
to 0-3 up, and they never fell behind
again. Ryan McGoverns lively raiding
brought him two first half points
from play to add to similar scores
from Aidan McGivern and Sean Murdock,
but despite the dominance of Anthony
Cunningham at midfield, Burren slipped
further behind by the interval, with
Turlough Murphy [2], Joe Fegan and
John fegan increasing the Rostrevor
lead to 1-6 to 0-4.
SETTLED
Goal number two settled the outcome
six minutes in to the second half.
A minute beforehand, Ryan McGovern
had rattled the visitors upright,
but Reds broke smoothly for Turlough
Murphy and Conor Mackin to send shaun
Parr through the middle of the Burren
defence and curl his shot past the
exposed Mark Rocks.
EDDIE OFF
Shaun Parr also added a point after
44 minutes to leave Rostrevor a comfortable
seven points clear with fifteen minutes
to play and even the dismissal of
Eddie magee after fifty minutes couldn’t
open a way back for Burren. Reds fans
enjoyed the further pleasure of welcoming
Conor Daly back for his first appearance
of the season and though only in the
game for a eight minutes, Conor should
have had a goal and a point to his
credit. His late point stood, but
he fouled the ball as he finished
a Joe Fegan pass to the net and the
score was rightly disallowed.
IMPROVEMENT
This was a much improved Rostrevor
performance from the previous week.Jarlath
farrell had an outstanding sixty minutes
in defence, and Shaun Parr broke classily
from midfield. In attack, Conor Daly,
John Fegan and Turlough Murphy all
made big contributions, but this was
Joe Fegans match and a succession
of Burren markers failed to make any
impression on the peppery Rostrevor
forward.
Burren were disappointing. Gerard
McCartan, Andrew Knapton and Ryan
McGovern all had their moments in
defence, and they actually dominated
midfield all through, in the first
half with Anthony Cunningham and in
the second with Eamon Toner. But it
was only with the introduction of
Eoin McCartan in the second half that
they began to move with menace, and
by that time Rostrevor had this match
firmly between their teeth.
