Saul
regain their place in Division 2 - 27/10/2003
A.C.F.L
Division 3 Promotion "Play-off"
Saul 1-14 Cann na Banna 1 - 11
By Paddy Curran, Saul PRO.
Saul travelled to Lietrim on Sunday to play Banbridge in the last round of Division
3 Promotion "Play-Offs. This was the "last Chance Saloon" for both sides, and
after a tremendous team effort Saul ran out winners on a 1-14 to 1-11 score. How
fitting it was that Saul should at last regain their place in Senior football
in this the year of their 75th Anniversary in front of a large band of supporters
on a perfect day for football.
Saul started nervously and Banbridge went
into a 0-4 to 0-0 lead after 10 minutes, Saul may have been in arrears but still
had plenty of the play, with 3 wides, before Peter McKenna opened their account
from a free after 16 minutes, Banbridge scored a point from a free after 17 minutes
before a fine goal from the fist of John McKinley on 25 minutes brought Saul back
into the game on 1-1 to 0-5 score, a point from Damian Campbell on 27 minutes
levelled affairs before a goal and a point from Banbridge on the 29th minute restored
their 4 point lead. But Saul did not buckle and point from Peter McKenna saw them
in arrears by just a goal at halftime on a 1-3 to 1-6 scoreline.
Saul
started the second half in a blistering fashion and 2 points from Michael Vint
in the first 2 minutes saw the Banbridge lead reduced to a point, 2 points from
Banbridge on 6 and 7 minutes saw them go back to a goal lead. Points from Damian
Campbell on the 8 and 9 minute mark and a point from JP Burke after 11 minutes
saw Saul draw level. A Peter McKenna point saw Saul take the lead for the first
time, only to see this lead wiped out a minute later, a John McKinley poit restored
the Saul lead which was again wiped out by a Banbridge free before Damian Campbell
gave Saul the lead on a 1-11 to 1-10 score.
A Noel Napier point extended
the lead to 2 points, but a pointed free from Banbridge on the hour left the margin
a point. But, points from David McKinley and Damian Campbell saw Saul end winners
on a 1-14 to 1-11 score.
This was a great game of football, one in which
Banbridge played their part, and if they play to the level they played to today
should ensure them the Junior Championship. Saul played some excellent football,
and showed that it is a team game.
Saul mentors lead by Paul Evans, will
have enjoyed the day, but how great it was to see Dr. Eddie Harney , who has worked
tirelessly to bring Saul from Div.4 to Div.2 bask in this success, as indeed also
the committee members like Peter Craig, Dessie Curran, Joe Ritchie, Kevin O'Hare,
Michael Blaney and Dermot Vint, who have watched Saul teams fall short on many
occasions over the years. This is what makes the GAA great.
