Taken from Saul Website
Saul made the short trip to Ardglass
on Friday past, hoping to get back to winning ways,
but unfortunately , despite a much improved performance,
lost out by a single goal to a fiercely competitive
Ardglass side. Saul opened the scoring with a point
from a free by Peter McKenna, Ardglass levelled the
match before Michael Vint restored the Saul lead with
a point from a “50” which was cancelled out by a point
from a free for the home side to leave the sides level
at 2 points a piece after 10 minutes. Saul than took
control and with 3 points from Michael Vint and a
point from Philip Trainor they lead by 0-6 to 0-2,
playing nice football in difficult conditions.
The match then got more physical,
with tempers frayed, and the sides were reduced to
14 a side with a double sending off. Ardglass scored
a point from a free after 20 minutes, and with 30
minutes of the half played Saul lead by 0-6 to 0-3.
But incredibly there was 5 minutes of added time,
in which Ardglass scored 3 points from frees. Ardglass
took the lead for the first time with a point 2 minutes
into the second half, Saul brought their superior
possession and better football to bear with an equalising
point from Philip Trainor on 8 minutes.
Ardglass were awarded a penalty after
10 minutes when the Saul full-back was adjudged to
have lifted the ball off the ground, the penalty was
well saved by Stephen Stratton in the Saul goal. Ardglass
then regained the lead following a point from yet
another free, but were then reduced to 13 men when
they lost another player for foul play. Saul were
then continuously on attack, but failed to break through
the Ardglass defence, and instead it was Ardgass who
extended there lead following a goal on a rare break
into the Saul half. Saul tried hard and points from
Hugh McGrath and JP Burke narrowed the gap to 2 points,
but the goal never quite materialised, and Ardglass
sealed the game with a point in injury time.
Saul will wonder how they lost this
game. In particular the defence, which is always very
disciplined will find it hard to understand how they
conceded so many frees, with 6 of the Ardglass scores
coming from frees. On the other hand the Saul attacked
came out well with all but 2 of their scores coming
from play.
Final score – Ardglass 1-9, Saul
0-9.
