Saul Notes - August 28th 2006

Saul GAC Club Notes for week of August 27th 2006

A quiet week in the club with only the U16's, U14's and U12's in action. The senior and reserve teams plus the girls teams all continued training in preparation for the conclusion of their leagues. The seniors also have a friendly arranged for this Friday night at home to Darragh Cross.

  • Teams Roundup:

  • Underage teams:

  • U16's: The U16's travelled to Dromara on Tuesday night in an attempt to close out on the runners-up position in the league. Dromara had already sealed the B league title and had beaten Saul earlier in the year at St Patricks Park but a superb performance saw the boys clinch a 2 point win and confirm 2nd place. Well done lads. The focus for the team is now on the Championship final on Saturday at 1pm in Ballykinlar against favourites Teconnaught. All available support is asked to be there to cheer on the boys.

  • U14's: Saul 2-6; Liatroim 4-10. The Under 14s entertained Liatroim knowing that victory would have put them into contention for league runners up position. Unfortunately their progress was halted by a strong Liatroim side which played some excellent football. The half-time score of 1:08 to 0:03 was not a fair reflection of the game as Saul missed a number of chances, and only for slack marking, the half-time score would have been much closer. Cathail Arnold was again outstanding in goals, and his kickouts when taken quickly were very effective. His brother Deaglan read the game very well, and his handling was faultless. Daniel Lyttle improves with every game and really looks like a senior player of the future, while John Thompson showed why he is on the East Down Under 14 squad with exceptional bravery and workrate. Rory Mullen picked up Liatroim's danger man in the second half and also got a chance to go forward for scores himself. Up front Saul found scores hard to come by but Tony Molyneaux and Seán Moreland did particularly well. Cillian Gallagher scored 2 cracking points and Conaill McGrady and Ciarán Harney combined for a cracking goal at a point when Saul threatened to steal the game. Liatroim however, hit back with two late goals for a deserved victory.

All Players are expected to attend for Football each Sunday at 4pm,and Thursday at 6.30pm.

Next match is this Thursday 31st August - meet at 6.30pm for home match against Loughinisland.

  • U12's: In Go-Games, Saul under 12s entertained Drumaness on Sunday past. This was another closely contested game with great displays from Tiarnan Curran, Ciaran McGrady and Cormac Byrne who defended well. Tony Molyneaux and Jack Murnin worked hard in midfield while Michael Rice, Ciaran Harney and Callum Mahoney played well in attack.

Under 12s should meet at Saul as usual, every Sunday at 11.30 am.

  • U10's: The under 10s are reminded that the final blitz of the year is in Kilclief this Saturday at 10am.All kids should be in Kilclief for 9.45am.

  • U14 Girls: The girls had no match again last week and now have a heavy backlog of games to catch up on. This will start to be addressed this week with 2 games. St Patrick's Park hosts the visit of Teconnaught on Tuesday night for a 7pm throw-in (be at Saul for 6pm) and on Sunday the girls are in Newry to take on Shamrocks at 12.30pm (meeting at Saul at 11am)
