Saul Notes - Feb 5th 2006

Saul GAC Notes - February 5th
- Seniors
- As the senior squad continue their build for
the new season, all players are reminded to keep
to the programme (check the website daily -
www.saul-gac.com), complete the player
comments & contact form and pay membership
before the next group session on February 26th
- Senior Ladies Training
- The senior ladies team took to the field on
Thursday and Monday night for their first
training sessions in preparation for their
league debut in the county junior league. The
girls were put through fitness sessions under
the guidance of Frank Holland who takes the
reins as manager for the season. Good Luck to
Frank and the dedicated ladies. Training will
continue on Monday nights at 7pm (bring your
boots and water bottles!). All current and new
players welcomed.
- Minors
- The minor team had a disappointing first
outing in the league with defeat against Bright
at Killough on Sunday past. In the early stages,
the young squad battled against the
non-appearance of at least 6 'starters' and an
increasingly coherent home outfit to turn in a
promising first half and went into the break
only 3 points down. However the loss of a
further starter in defense at the end of the
half meant that the second half was going to be
an even bigger challenge and that turned out to
be too big as the blue and gold shipped goals in
the second half. Despite the loss there were
quite a few positives for the Saul manager Gary
Laverty to take away. Conor Shields had an
outstanding game for Saul, strong in winning
possession and driving the team forward on
numerous occasions with driven accurate play.
Callum Laverty, Brian Gaffney and Chris Mullen
also grafted hard right to the end and there
were encouraging performances from the younger
players Danny Curran, Thomas McGuiness and Jude
McLaughlin to give note that although beaten
first time round, a strong attendance at
training (Friday night @ 6.30pm at Dunleath
Park) and the reintroduction of some of those
missing on Sunday will allow this team to get
the results their dedication deserves.
- U12/U14 Ladies Training
- The U12 and U14 girls teams begin
training this Sunday at 12.30pm. Bring your
boots and water bottles and besides the coaching
session there'll be a chance to register if you
missed the session a few weeks back. All
memberships are also now due. A new jersey
sponsor for the teams plus some friendly
pre-season fixtures will be announced shortly.
- U12/U14 Registration
- Next up on the player registration schedule,
its the turn of the U12 and U14 boys teams this
Sunday (Feb 12th) at 12.15pm. All current and
new players are welcomed there and parents are
especially welcomed. Tea/coffee will be
provided.
- Mentors Meeting
- Next meeting for all club managers and
coaches in this Tuesday (Feb 7th) at 7.30pm in
the clubrooms. A lot of important work needs to
be continued as all the teams start preparation
for the season ahead.
- Scor
- The clubs representatives in Scor Sinsear
helped entertain a large crowd in Saul hall on
Sunday night in the East Down semi-finals and
had a very successful evening. The club had
successes in all categories entered progressing
to the East Down final in the Ballad Group
(Gareth McGreevy, Angela McGreevy, Sinead
Magorrian, Louise Hamill, Catherine McGrath),
Recitation (Gareth McGreevy), Solo Singing
(Carol Deegan), Instrumental Music (Danny
McGreevy, Gareth McGreevy, Angela McGreevy,
Sarah Clark, John Savage) and Ceili Dancing
(Carol Deegan, Niamh McPolin, Ciara Morgan,
Joanne Carson, Olivia Kennedy, Fiona O'Prey,
Evonne McDonald, Emma Traynor). Best wishes and
support to all our representatives in the East
Down final on Sunday 19th February in Dundrum
(6.30pm start).
- Courses
- In a busy weekend for the club coaches,
there were a number courses/conferences
attended. The county conference was held on
Saturday past at St Malachys Castlewellan with
the prime focus being the launch of the Go-Games
concept which will change the way that we
organise our games for U-8's, U-10's and U-12's
to focus on key skills, dominant and
non-dominant hand/foot usage and most
importantly full participation for all our kids.
Also, last weekend a SAQ training course was
attended in Killyleagh which will drive the
standard way that all our teams will warm-up and
prepare for our training sessions and games.
Further courses upcoming in February include
Innovative training (Wed, Feb 15th), First Aid
(Tues, Feb 21st) and Goalkeeping coaching (Weds,
Feb 22nd) and current and new coaches active in
the club will be in attendance.
