Saul Notes - April 8th 2007

Saul GAC Club Notes for week of April 8th 2007

Teams Roundup

The U12 and U14 boys have a successful trip to Armagh for challenge games as the seniors gear up for the start of the 2007 league ......

U12 Boys:
Saul U12's made the trip to South Armagh to face a strong Mullaghbawn team and got off to a great start, with ‘keeper Connor Hazard outstanding in nets. The defence took after their goalkeeper’s sterling performance with Conall McGreevy, Paul McMullan and Joe Hayes also putting in a good day’s work. Captain for the day Cormac Byrne returned to his footballing roots where his father once marshalled the home pitch. Saul’s Tony Molyneaux and Ciaran Harney battled hard in midfield, gradually getting the better of the exchanges as the game progressed. Saul made the most of their scoring opportunities with Callum Mahoney and Michael Rice both scoring with great skill and the blue and gold also had the experience of Cathal Sloan and Connor Marron to call on up front, who when given a chance made sure of a finish. All 26 boys enjoyed the occasion and where thrilled with the win.

Training for the U12's this week will be on  Easter Tuesday for a special training session (4:15pm to 6:15pm) and as usual on Thursday - 6pm to 7pm.

The first U12 Go Games match is on Sunday, away to Carryduff. The team will depart St Patrick's Park at 11-15 a.m. sharp from St Patrick's Park. If you have any queries please contact Eddie Harney on 07764931637.

The Under 10s train with the under 12s every Thursday at 6pm with their First blitz tournament of the year due to take place on April 21st in Kilclief. The younger kids P1-3 do not attend until after Easter (Thurs, April 19th to be exact).

As usual, information for all the club's teams is available on the club website www.saul-gac.com.

U14 Friendly - Mullaghbawn 4-4; Saul 7-14
The U14's arrived in Mullaghbawn for their second friendly of the season and came away with an impressive win. Saul got to grips with the game early and points from Sam Burns, Leigh Cunningham and the impressive Rory Mullen settled the visitors. The Mullaghbawn attack was well marshaled during the first quarter as Saul defenders Deaglin Arnold, Killian Gallagher and Jamie McComiskey dominated. Some fantastic support play and running off the ball opened up the Mullaghbawn defense with Saul scoring five first half goals from Cunningham, Arthur Morgan, Conail McGrady, Brendan Breen and Mullen. Mullaghbawn regrouped and managed one goal and one point. However the home side’s luck was out, as during this period of pressure they hit the woodwork three times. Saul rounded of the half with points from Cunningham, Breen, Mullen, Jack Murnin and two from Timmy Russell.

Mullaghbawn lifted their game in the second and made Saul work hard despite having the breeze on their backs. The home side started with an early point however resolute defending by Gallagher, Arnold, Liam Dunlop and the tenacious Ciaran McGrady kept Saul well in control. The introduction of Mark Magill to the forward line paid off as he scored two classy points with the aid of Sean Moreland. Building from the defense Saul continued to press and a goal and a point a piece for Cunningham and Conail McGrady left Saul with a comfortable lead. The ever reliable Cathail Arnold could do little to stop two late consolation goals for the home side who kept going to the final whistle. This was another great performance by the Saul lads and they really enjoyed the trip to South Armagh.

The Under 14 boys next match is a friendly against Downpatrick RGU this Thursday night and and all players are asked to be at the clubrooms for 6-30pm. A special training session will also be held on Easter Tuesday between 4:15pm to 6:15pm
