Saul GAC Club Notes for week of
February 25th 2007
Down County
Scor Sinsear Finals - Ceili Dancers
win through
With 4 entrants making it through to
the county final of Scor Sinsear on
Sunday night in Saval, a big support
from Saul made the trip to South Down
to support the teams. After a set of
high standard performances from all
the competitors on show, Saul were
named county champions in Ceili Dance
and despite making the judges'
decisions difficult in the Ballad
Group, Recitation and Instrumental
Music, Saul had to settle for the 1
title. Well done to the Ceili Dancers
(Carol Deegan, Ciara Burns, Emma
Trainor, Michelle Walsh, Olivia
Kennedy, Fiona O’Prey, Fiona Cotter
and Joanne Carson) on going on to
represent Down in the Ulster
Semi-Final and commiserations to
Gareth McGreevy (Recitation), Sinead
McGorrian, Louise Hamill, Catherine
McGrath, Angela McGreevy and Gareth
McGreevy (Ballad Group) and Angela
McGreevy, Gareth McGreevy, Sarah
Clarke and Peter Brennan (Instrumental
Music) who while ultimately
unsuccessful have all brought great
credit on themselves and the club with
the progress to the final. Good Luck
to the Ceili Dancers in the Ulster
Semi-Final on Saturday against the
Derry and Antrim champions. The action
takes place at St Malachys,
Castlewellan and starts at 7pm sharp.
Saul Table Quiz - Ready 4 the
Road take the laurels
The first Saul club social event of
2007 took place on Friday with a very
well supported table quiz in Paddys
Barn, Saul. Thirteen teams enjoyed a
night of multi-topic'ed challenges
ranging from Saul club achievements,
famous autobiographies, lyrical
recognition, right through to the
creative reasons why the chicken may
have crossed the road. At the half-way
point, 'Ready 4 the Road' held a
narrow lead over the 'The Succulent 7'
and it was starting to look like a 2
horse race. But, in a nail-biting 2nd
half, 'The Pokers' finished very
strongly to come from 4th place at the
mid-point to eventually tie with
'Ready 4 the Road' for first place. It
was down to a tie-breaker and the
musical intros skills of the 'Ready 4
the Road' team saw them hold on to win
overall. While these events always
have to have a winner, all the teams
made the night the success it turned
out to be so the club wishes to thank
everyone for their support and we hope
to have a follow-up quiz later in the
year.

Congrats RedHigh teams
Well done to the RedHigh Loch an Iuir
Squad who defeated Our Lady & St
Patrick's Knock by 4 points in the
Loch an Iuir semi-final last Wednesday
at St Pauls Holywood. The Saul lads
(Leigh Cunningham, Rory Mullen and
Cathail Arnold) all played their part
and they deserve their place in the
final against St. Columb's Derry (in a
repeat of last years showdown).
Penalty king Cathail Arnold, by all
accounts, repeated his match winning
penalty save of the quarter final with
another crucial spotkick save. Well
done boys - you're doing us proud....
Also with the RedHigh, its worth
mentioning the O'Doherty Cup team who
reached their semi-final on Monday by
defeating St Louis, Ballymena. Saul's
Chris Fitzsimons is a key member of
the squad and here's hoping they can
also go all the way.
