Saul Ladies Presentation

Saul GAC Ladies had a very successful presentation evening on Sunday where players who represented the club at U12, U14 and U16 levels came together along with their parents to review and recognise the achievements of a great year. Ulster, Down and RGU star Kyla Trainor was the guest of honour and she encouraged the girls to focus and achieve their sporting dreams. First up on the honours list were the winners of the internal tournament which was run at the end of the season and won by Rachel Curran's 'Green' team. Medals were also presented to all the competing teams and the top-10 individuals from the tournament which took place over 3 weekends. The focus then moved onto the teams who competed in Blue and Gold across the age groups. 2007 saw Saul ladies compete at U16 level for the first time and after a mid-table finish in the league and with virtually all of the side available again in 2008, things look bright. For the U16's, Tara Laverty won the sportsperson award with Grainne Laverty taking the player of the year. A special presentation was also made to Gemma Toner and Roisin Torney who also competed excellently in the blue & gold colours while temporarily transferred from neighbours Bright. For the U14 girls, managers Irene Fitzsimons and Margaret Laverty rewarded Katie Bohill with the sportsperson trophy and county representative Rachel Curran took the player of the year award. Finally, came the U12 girls who made history this year when winning the first silverware in Saul GAC Ladies history when they won the all-county B league. Managers Paul & Donna Vaughan introduced Sarah Curran who accepted the U12 cup from Kyla with the victorious squad all getting their league medals. On the individual level, Ethna Morgan won the 'most improved player' award and midfielder Kate Turley was presented with the U12 player of the year trophy before the night was brought to a close with Kyla Trainor receiving a gift from Saul in appreciation for her efforts in ladies football in Down and beyond. Registration date for the 2008 season was set for January 20th 2008 when Saul ladies will begin preparations for the next step upwards in their short history.

Under 13 League: Saul 6-5; Drumaness 7-6

Saul welcomed a lively Drumaness side to Saul on Sunday for another under 13 league match and it was a sporting encounter between 2 evenly matched sides. Saul had the better of the initial exchanges and struck for 2 early goals through Tony Molyneaux, and John Hampton but overtime, they were finding it difficult to cope with the strong running Ryan Murdoch who had an exceptional game in the Drumaness midfield, and at half-time the teams went in level.

On the resumption the visitors hit Saul with early goals to go into a deserved lead. giving the home side a mountain to climb but they battled bravely to get back into contention, with Ciarán Harney finishing a mazy run with a superb goal. Líam Dunlop followed up with another major score but unfortunately the "Blue & Gold" couldn't secure any further major scores and Drumaness ran out winners on a scoreline of 7-6 to 6-5.

The Saul lads will take a lot from this game as they start to become accustomed to playing on the bigger pitch. They will reflect on some strong performances from the likes of Sam McKee and especially Cormac Byrne while a feature of the game was the leadership of inspirational skipper Mikey Rice at half back.

In a reverse to the originally planned fixture for this weekend, Saul now host Carryduff on Sunday for their penultimate league game. Players to be at Saul for 11.15am.

Meanwhile, and prior to that game, Down and Ulster star Dan Gordon will be our special guest at the boys - juvenile presentation in Saul at 5pm this Saturday. We need all parents to help either with food, drink or sponsorship etc, to make it a special night for all our players who have enjoyed such a successful season at all levels.
