SAVAL LADIES FOOTBALL NEWS

JUNIOR GIRLS INTO SEMI-FINALS OF CHAMPIONSHIP

Saval 4-14    Carryduff 4-4

On a sunny St Malachy’s Park Castlewellan last Saturday evening the Junior team did themselves proud with a hard earned victory over a spirited Carryduff side.

Saval got off to a dream start with a goal from full forward Ashleen McEvoy. Saval were to add 3 more points before Carryduff came back strongly with a well taken goal. It was now end to end football with lots of goal mouth action. The half finished with Saval in with a 4 point lead. Saval 3-4
   Carryduff 3-0.

The second half started like the first with Saval in the ascendancy firing over 4 points without reply.

Once again Carryduff hit back with a goal and a point following some fine play. An Ashleen McEvoy goal settled Saval and they then began to play with much more confidence and futher scores were added. Carryduff were to add 3 more points to their total to leave the final score Saval 4-14 Carryduff 4-4.

Overall this was a very good performance considering that 6 regulars were missing due to holiday and work commitments which meant a number of players found themselves in unfamiliar positions.

Saval’s top performers were Niamh McGowan at full back, Rachel O,Hare at centre half, the midfield due of Aine Crozier and Jenny Hehir worked tirelessly throughout, up front Vicki Lennon, Aideen Collins and Ashleen McEvoy were always a danger.

The game was played in the right manner with two evenly matched teams with plenty of exciting football on display for the fans and was expertly refereed by Castlewellan’s Gerard Brannigan. To quote a number of the girls “That was the best referee we ever had”, high praise indeed for the man in the middle.

Saval will now meet the winners of the Bredagh v Tecconaught clash.

The match is scheduled for Saturday 30 th July. Let’s hope the Gaeltacht is cancelled!!!
