Under 16 Girls

Sunday 10 June – Burren 2-9   Saval 5-12

In recent years Saval and Burren have dominated Under16 football in Down.

When the fixtures came out way back in February this was the one that the girls looked for. In the preceding weeks there was a lot of friendly rivalry between the girls who attend the local schools. Word was that Burren had been training hard and had the team to beat us this time.

As local derbies go this was the big one, there was no need to motivate the girls for the game as team Captain Niamh Millar put it “losing to Burren is not an option”.

The first 20 minutes of the opening half there was little to choose between the sides until Saval hit a purple patch and adding scores in quick succession with major scores coming from Lorraine Havern(2) and Natashya Lennon to leave the half time score Burren 0-5 Saval 3-7

It was Burren who dominated the early stages of the second half scoring at will to come within five points of Saval. A fantastic save by Saval keeper Christine McCarthy was the turning point in the game. Christine’s pass up the field resulted in a Lorraine Havern point. This score settled Saval and they began to play the fast flowing football they are capable of .The defence stayed strong and the forwards now took over. The final quarter it was all Saval with Under 14 Derry Star Emma Walsh scoring 2 great goals.

This was an excellent team performance which keeps the girls unbeaten run intact.

They have one more game left which is away to Bryansford .The girls know that a victory in Newcastle means that they retain the County Under 16 League title.
