Shamrocks
come up trumps against Clonduff - 15/08/2003
Down
Football Senior Championship - Shamrocks 0-12 Clonduff 0-09
Newry Shamrock caused the first SFC shock of the season last
night (Thursday 14th August) when they defeated first division Clonduff in St.
Mary's Park, Burren on a scoreline of 0-12 to 0-9. The Division 2 side were always
the livelier and fitter outfit, playing some delightful football and taking some
great scores.
They produced a great comeback in the second-half
after trailing by 0-7 to 0-4 at the break, and got their winning scores in the
closing ten minutes of an absorbing and thrilling encounter. The dominance of
the Shamrocks midfield duo of Kevin McGuigan and Ciaran Conlon especially in the
second-half paved the way for this upset result.
Former
Down All Ireland winning captain, DJ Kane's was introduced as a second half substitute.
His introduction helped inspire Newry Shamrocks to their surprise win over Clonduff.
Kane was aided by a superb display from Collie Burns who was switched to midfield
after half-time. Brendan Loughran scored three crucial points for Shamrocks. Minor
Jason Browne notched three points for Clonduff but Shamrock held on for a fully
deserved win.
Kane's All-Ireland winning colleague and current
county minor team-manager Ross Carr was introduced as a sub for the Clonduff side
in place of another former Down senior star, Peter Whitnell.
