Div 4: St Pauls 0-09

By Sean Clark, St John's
St johns went to St pauls looking
to pick up two vital points that would keep them on
the tails of glenn at the top of division 4. They
managed to get the points when the beat them 1-09
- 0-09. The match began with a stiff breeze, st johns
began by playing with the wind for the first half,
within the first 3 minutes Damion Murray and Aidan
Kelly, two of the full foward line had been in st
pauls goal mouth 3 times looking to get goals but
shot narrowly wide twice and the cross bar also denying
them.
They finally got their first score
from Damion murray about 10 minutes into the game
as a point. This settled the nerves of the johnnies
and allowed them to hit a further 4 points from play
and frees, St pauls wasted alot of the ball, the jhonnies
defence crucified each time by picking up the breaking
ball and setting up another attack, Declan burns was
inspirational at full back denying his man any space
to run. Mid way through the 2nd half st pauls added
a few scores to leave themselves within touching distance
of st.johns.
At the start of the second half st
pauls began to come back into the game by hitting
2 further points, at the crucial moment kevin savage
the centre half foward of st johns fed the ball through
to damion murray who made great work of chipping the
keeper to get that well worked goal for the jhonnies
which made the score 1-06 - 0-05. Soon after this
the mighty savage put the ball between the posts to
add another point onto the st johns tally. The wind
died down alot which favoured st pauls more as they
began to win alot of the st johns kickouts and began
putting the jhonnies defence under a bit of pressure
but the stood up firm especially gary addiss the keeper
and the two burns brothers conor and declan, to only
allow st pauls to get 4 long range points.
Towards the end the jhonnies were
back on top and they were winning the battle at midfield,
feeding the ball to eugene o'boyle who hit a magnificant
point from the tightest of angles, Damion murray followed
up with two further points to make it 1-09 - 0-09.
