St John’s Notes 8th August

St John’s Notes         8th August

The camogie team played Darragh Cross on Monday evening hoping to maintain their unbeaten league record. Under-12 and under-14 camogie training continues on Monday evenings.

The seniors begin their championship campaign with a tie against Ballykinlar at Drumaness on Wednesday evening.

There will be no training for the under-8s or under-10s on Wednesday evening because of the championship match. The under-10s again gave a very good account of themselves at the East Down Blitz in Drumaness on Saturday. There were very unfortunate not to make it through to the knock-out stages after wins over Loughinisland and Ballykinlar and losing out to Carryduff by two points (in a game where they dominated play). The team also enjoyed a good challenge game against Drumaness after the group stage games and came out on top. There will hopefully be a number of mini-blitzes and challenge games to come for this group before the end of September. Ideally these will features games at under-10, under-9 and even under-8 level.

The under-12 footballers travelled to Drumaness on Sunday morning and came home with both league points. Attention now turns to the championship quarter-final away to St Paul’s next Sunday.

The under-16s entertained Bryansford in a league game last Tuesday. Bryansford were on top for the first half and build up a good lead but St John’s rallied in the second period and after, hitting a purple patch, they closed the margin to a point. Bryansford held out to get the league points but the game whets the appetite for the championship semi-final clash between the two on Saturday August 27th. The team had a bye yesterday and their next league fixture is a home game against Bredagh next Tuesday (23rd).

The lottery numbers on 4th were 10, 24, 26 and 27. There were no winners at all. The jackpot now stands at £3,850.

Congratulations to county minors on making it through to the All-Ireland semi-finals. Bearing in mind that the under-21s have already reached the All-Ireland final there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the future of Down football.

If anyone is interested in a trip to Croke Park on Sunday 2nd October to see the TnaG Ladies Football finals (senior & junior) should contact Kevin McGlynn (4481 1876) or Jackie Quinn.

The Annual Sports Day will be held on Sunday 21st August and promise an action packed programme.
