St John’s Notes 25th
July
The
senior footballers were back in action
after the holiday break with a
comfortable home win against
Aughlisnafin (3-25 v 0-02). They face
another local derby on Friday evening
with the short trip to Dromara, with
local bragging rights at stake.
Some of
the under-10 footballers took part in
the Pat Doyle Memorial Tournament in
Liatriom this Saturday and performed
very well winning through to the
semi-finals. The boys and girls enjoyed
playing teams from further a field than
usual playing three teams from South
Down and one from Antrim as well as
hosts and East Down neighbour’s Liatroim.
The team opened with a win over
Longstone (3-01 to 1-00) before
suffering a reverse against Saval (0-02
v 1-03). They recovered to beat Glenavy
in the final group game (0-05 v 1-01). A
“golden goal” saw them trough to the
semi-final as they beat Ballyholland
(2-03 to 1-03). They went down to hosts
Liatroim in the semi-final (1-02 v
3-03). So the final featured the two
sides to overcome St John’s, with Saval
coming out as victors against Liatroim.
The event was very well run, and we
extend our thanks to the Liatroim club
and to Josie Doyle and her family for
making us welcome and doing so much to
ensure that this was a very enjoyable
outing for our players and mentors.
Training for the under-10s and under-8s
continues on Wednesday (6.30 to 7.30pm),
and everyone is looking forward to the
next East Down blitz on Saturday August
6th (probably in Drumaness).
The under-12 footballers were
disappointed not to get a game on Sunday
afternoon as the opposition failed to
show. They played a high quality
practice match amongst themselves
instead. Their next scheduled league
game is away to Drumaness on Sunday week
(7th August).
The
under-14 league is set to resume on
Thursday 4th August with a
trip to Kilclief in store. That could be
followed by the three toughest games yet
as the team take on Darragh Cross (home)
and Teconnaught (away). Both sides have
already played out draws with St John’s
in the reverse fixtures. The under-14s
also have to play a home fixture against
Drumaness, the only team to have beaten
them in the league so far (date to be
arranged).
Again
the under-16s missed out on a game
before the holidays as their fixture was
postponed to accommodate the Down
minors’ semi-final replay. They were
away to Castlewellan last night. The
next scheduled fixtures are at home to
Bredagh in the league (August 23rd)
and a championship semi-final against
Bryansford on Saturday August 27th.
There may also be league fixtures at
home to Bryansford and Castlewellan to
be scheduled in as well.
Under-12
and under-14 camogie training resumed on
Monday past after a two week break.
The
lottery numbers on 21st were
7, 12, 13 and 26. There were five £10
winners. The jackpot now stands at
£3,750.
