St John’s Notes 6th
June
We were
surprised and delighted with the turn
out for the first training evening for
of ladies football team. All
expectations were surpassed when almost
40 ladies signed up and took part in the
first training session. The next session
is this evening (Wednesday) at 7.30pm.
The
minor footballers are also in action
this evening when they travel to Dundrum
for an outstanding league game. I would
anticipate a close game. There will
still be one league game to be played
after this, at home to Teconnaught. Last
Wednesday the minors went down to a very
talented St Martin’s side (Saval and
Glenn combined), but now look forward to
entertaining St John Boscos in the B
championship at the end of the month.
The
senior footballers made the trip to St
Paul’s on Friday. The teams were level
at half-time but with St John’s having
to work extremely hard for their scores
in the second period it was the Holywood
men who went on to win by 1-11 to 0-07.
That game marked the half-way point in
the league. This Friday the team make
the trip to runaway leaders St
Michael’s. St Michael’s were the victors
by four points in the first encounter,
but that could be overturned this time.
The reserves are away to Drumaness this
Sunday
The
under-16s took on Castlewellan last week
in a game that neither side deserved to
loose. There was only a point in it at
the turnaround but when Castlewellan got
four unanswered points to stretch their
lead at the start of the second period
it looked as if the visitors would go on
to win, but the Johnnies would have none
of it and fought back to reel in the
margin. Last night the team took on
Carryduff in the championship. Next
Tuesday they are at home to Kilcoo in
the league.
Bredagh
put paid to the under-14s’ championship
ambitions last Thursday with a deserved
victory. Conor Morgan and Shane Rice top
scored for the Johnnies while Joe
Lennon, Ryan O’Reilly and Anthony Doran
all made valuable contributions at the
back. Tomorrow evening the under-14s are
at home to Loughinisland. As with the
seniors this game marks the start of the
second half of the league – in the first
half the Johnnies won more than they
lost and drew a couple too.
The
under-12s played Drumaness in a
re-arranged league fixture on Monday
evening. They will be at home to an
improving Teconnaught side this Sunday.
The
under-10s attended the East Down blitz
in Liatriom on Saturday and enjoyed a
great day of football. In an hour of
football seventeen young football got
the opportunity to display the skills
they have been working on in training.
They took on neighbours Drumaness in the
first game and came out on top. They
then got the better of Bryansford and
were ahead against Carryduff A after the
first half. In the Second period netted
a couple of times at the “big goal” end
and so got through the day undefeated.
Every member of the squad made an
important contribution but a special
mention must go to Michael Keenan for
the security he provided as goalkeeper.
Patrick Keenan was a powerful presence
in midfield and it must be remembered
that the hard work done by backs is
every bit as important as the scoring by
the forwards.
The
camogie team were to make the trip to
Longstone on Monday while the under-14s
are due to entertain near neighbour
Liatroim this week also.
Briar
will be playing in the clubrooms on
Thursday June 16, with proceeds going to
the Romanian Helpline Appeal.
The
lottery numbers drawn on the 2nd
June were 3, 11, 13 and 16. Nine players
matched three numbers. The lottery
jackpot now stands at £3,400.
