St John’s Notes 30th
May
A new
era dawns at St John’s this evening
(Wednesday) when our new ladies football
team has its first training session at
our field at 7.30pm. Everyone is
whole-heartedly behind this venture and
we wish the new team every success.
The
camogie ladies are already doing well
this season and we hope that the advent
of ladies football will not have an
adverse effect on them. Their league
record reads played three – won three,
with victories at home over Darragh
Cross and on their travels to Aghaderg
and Dromara. You can’t do better than
that.
The
senior footballers went down at home to
Bright on Friday. The first half was a
close affair with the accuracy of
Bright’s free-takers allowing them to go
in one point ahead. The second period
belonged to the visitors who went on to
win comfortably. They now face two tough
away games at St Paul’s, which completes
the first half of the league campaign,
and St Michael’s on the next two
Fridays.
The
reserves, however, had a good win at
home to St Paul’s on Sunday (1-13 to
0-05).
The
minors didn’t have a game last week but
take on St Martin’s this evening
(Wednesday) in the championship. They
have been playing well throughout the
month of May and if this can be
continued they can look forward to a
quarter-final at the end of June (29th).
They still have two outstanding league
games, away to Dundrum and at home to
Loughinisland, to be rearranged.
The
under-16s went down by two points away
to Carryduff last week, but hopefully
they will have done better at home to
Castlewellan last night. Next Tuesday
they are at home to Carryduff in the
quarter-final of the A championship. In
the league encounters the under-16 side
suffered two reverses, by one point at
home and by two away, but this squad are
more than capable of overturning this
deficit.
The
under-14s didn’t have a game last week,
but will be in A championship action
tomorrow with the visit of Bredagh.
Bredagh are currently mid-table in
Section A of the league and will start
as favourites - but you shouldn’t always
back the favourites.
The under-12s had a comfortable win in
the championship away to Teconnaught on
Sunday. Teconnaught had improved since
the league encounter between the two but
could not contain Joe Milligan and
Martin Keenan in midfield. Eleven
players got on the scoresheet for St
John’s; as well as the more familiar
names the list included Darren Morgan,
John Girvan, Ciara Kelly, Adam Brennan
and, all the way from the back, Ryan
Gordon. We wish Christopher McKay a
speedy recovery and quick return to
action.
The
under-14 camogie team suffered a reverse
away to Darragh Cross. There is an
urgent need to get better attendance at
training so that match performances will
improve.
Briar
will be playing in the clubrooms on
Thursday 16th, with proceeds
going to the Romanian Helpline Appeal.
The
lottery numbers drawn on the 26th
May were 3, 10, 15 and 16. Two players
matched three numbers. The lottery
jackpot now stands at £3,350.
