St John’s Notes 26th
September
Congratulations to Down minors and
Tyrone for bringing the Tom Markham and
Sam Maguire Cups home.
The under-12s are keenly looking forward
to their own championship decider
against Newry Boscos. No date has been
fixed for this county final yet. In the
meantime the team kept on their toes
with a challenge game away to Longstone.
The Longstone lads pushed the Johnnies
all they way, which is exactly what was
required, but the visitors came out on
top (4-06 v 3-04).
The
camogie team are facing a similarly
frustrating time as they wait their last
league game against Ballela. This is an
important game as a win for Ballela will
secure a league and championship double
for them, but a win for St John’s will
mean that there will be a playoff for
the league.
The season ended for our youngest
players on Saturday morning when we
entertained Saul in a couple of
challenge games at under-10 and under-8
levels. Both games featured all the
enthusiasm you’d expect from these age
groups but they also produced passages
of great entertaining football. In the
under-10s game St John’s were sometimes
let down by poor passing and could learn
from the way Saul could move the ball
down the wings with players supporting
each other. However, when St John’s did
get the ball moving they were well able
to take advantage.
The under-8 game was a great warm up for
the players who then went on to take
part in a skills demonstration. This was
an excellent opportunity for them to
demonstrate how well they had mastered
the basic skills of the game. This is
the foundation that will see them go on
to win league titles and contest
championship finals as the older
juveniles have done this year.
When
you see the great work being done with
these young children and the enjoyment
they get from taking part you understand
how important it is that the club
provide the best possible facilities for
them in the years to come. As anyone who
has been keeping an eye on the work
across the river will testify, the
development of the second field is
coming on apace. This will be a great
asset for the club and for the young
sportsmen and women coming up through
the ranks – and its not too late to sign
up to the gift aid scheme to help share
the load for this great project.
Eoin
Walsh (4375 1794) and Pep Keenan (4377
8712) are looking for potential looking
for Scor performers – so if you are a
singer, a dancer, a reciter, a musician
or a quiz buffs – they would like to
hear from you.
I don’t
know what all the fuss is about – there
are still plenty of tickets to be had
for the All-Ireland final in Croke Park.
Anyone interested in a trip to
headquarters next Sunday to the TnaG
Ladies Football finals (Cork v Galway;
Armagh v Sligo) should contact Pep
Keenan (4377 8712) or Jackie Quinn.
The
lottery numbers for 22nd
September were 6, 11, 13 and 23. There
were six players who matched three
numbers and get a tenner each. The
jackpot now stands at £4,200.
The
will be a table quiz in the Maghera Inn
on Thursday 29th with the
proceeds going to the Ladies Football
team.
There
will be a Poker Night on Friday 14th
October in the clubrooms.
